Thank you! I actually don't have any tutorials. When my characters have big plate scales, I usually just draw and shade them by hand. For this drawing and this one ( cleanse ), I actually made a custom brush for the scales. What I did is paint a single scale in white on a black BG (because it helps me to paint the highlights in white), then invert it so the whole picture is white with the highlights in black - save that as a brush. Then you can choose alight color and paint scales onto a dark body.
I don't think that the brushes can stand on their own - I think that anything made with a brush requires some manipulation and editing afterward to look organic. But this is a good place to start. I do this and add some details afterward.
I hope that info helped!

I wanna hop on that large, stronk neck. It looks like a moving brick wall of stronkness it's amazing. This is a beautiful neck.
I really love this neck.

Thanks! and for your question i did use SAI!
i edited it with Photoshop just for the filter,
SAI sadly doesn't have all the filters that photoshop have, and i find that
Photoshop is better for filters and editing,

Thank you very much for this. I'm really new when it comes to digital art and I've yet to find my own way with coloring.
On a side note, I like your color choices for this one, it really brings out a sort of majestic or awe inspiring feel to it with the depth.

why you are really quite welcome! I have a PSD file uploaded and a tutorial on how to add color using gradient maps. Did you see those too? c:

It's the idea of going in without lines that blinds me and stops me from being any good at doing anything with color.. I really think trying to wrap my head around this concept will help and seeing the way you over layed a little sketch and then colored loosely around that really helps. Thanks so much

I die a little every time I notice that I'll probably have to quit SAI and use photoshop again... Because my shading in SAI always ends up looking horrible and by all means, I REALLY always adored your style in these ^ . It's just so beautiful, I don't even ._. and here rabenfeder.deviantart.com/art/… I tried real hard on the fur for many hours and still don't know why it just doesn't touch me -_- (I slacked on the hair, ik, but i was kinda wanting to end it.. i get pretty sloppy towards the end) ahh shinzzzz~~~
I don't guess that I can make this work in anyway? ;w; with all the tools

I've been practicing in painter to hopefully be able to paint as smooth as this, but man i can never get the shading as smooth as that lol. i love how you do this. man though i get so lost if there isn't a fairly drawn out sketch to work with X.x gonna try working over a light sketch next time lol

Hey Shinerai! I'm just wondering...what brush do you use to paint? I use a custom one but I'm having troubles creating sharper/smoother shading. I used photoshop by the way.
I've never been successful with the brush that sort of acts as a like a of gradient based on pressure, and I haven't had any luck with the airbrush either. I always try and smooth things out using the eyedropper tool as well so that's not the issue...it seems like no matter what brush I use my works never come out smooth :c and no tutorial i've come across seems to explain it.

Actually, to paint I use the one that you were talking about, that acts like a gradient based on pressure. I typically use a mid-range pressure sensitivity (compared to firm, which I use when lining). It definitely took me a long time to get used to it and it's probably not the most efficient brush but it's the one I like the most xD

Oh man this is absolutely fantastic. I've been having trouble getting the hang of lineless digital painting until someone simply said to me: "Stop trying to treat it like drawing, its more like sculpting", and wow, everything just clicked. Your process is an excellent representation of that and has most definitely given me a clearer idea of how to go about digitally painting, thank you!

Shinerai In reply to KiRAWRa [2013-03-06 06:57:38 +0000 UTC]
I'm glad you enjoyed the progress image! It took me a long time for it to click, too. I originally started out with a refined sketch and then I would have to work within the confines of lines, without actually having lines and, well, it just wasn't easy. I found that being more carefree and kinda making it up as you go is a lot more enjoyable and simple!
