Also, this makes me wonder if the traditional portrayal of Hel is a misinterpretation and her being "half black half white" is meant in what means today instead of literally one side of her body being colored white and the other side colored black.

In this story "sisters" is merely a thing they call each other much like people in the military call each other "brothers at arms".
