I like both equally for the process, but I definitely like having original art to show off rather than prints at shows.

No, copic markers and polychromos pencils. I do not like prismacolor anymore after having tried these better alternatives!

Are you using Bristol paper?

Precisely. (but illustration board is even better, I can just never find it here)

Same as Copic (manga drawing paper)in a way, But there all so expensive depending in some art DPT. I could only afford the ones they sell in public College Campuses-and it's worth it!

shinigamigirl In reply to msilvestre [2009-01-06 02:59:48 +0000 UTC]

I don't have experience with the particular brand you speak of, but bristol is NOT at all anything like marker paper (which is usually marketed as manga drawing paper, is it the case here?). I hate marker paper, it's thin and horrible! :/

Good paper is expensive, but worth it. Usually something like 50 cents a big sheet, which is quite decent considering how much it makes your life easier!

Also the fact that it doesn't ruin as much when you erase, depends on what kind eraser, I use the gray puddy eraser.

I know this question is random but most guys out there draw on computer paper and still look awesome!

shinigamigirl In reply to msilvestre [2009-01-07 21:08:33 +0000 UTC]

Drawing yes, but show me an awesomely traditionally colored piece on computer paper! XD

(actually with markers I sometimes use it too, but I don't like inking on it much). I also always use printer paper for pieces I will be coloring digitally, otherwise it's a waste of good coloring paper!

Here is a friend of mine who draws on Printer paper (that is Computer paper)
She is a big fan of this Japanese band.

[link] Black and White I have seen this in person and it keeps blowing me away all the time.

She's pretty good, and please don't take offense, I wouldn't say that this is impressive (at least, not in my opinion). She should really try to work more on color and layer it rather than just "burnishing" (don't know if this is the right English word, I mean when you saturate the paper with the colored pencils and it's all waxy, rendering you unable to work more color on top).
I also don't think my work is impressive, so don't take this in a condescending tone. (and also used to make this same mistake)

IMO [link] this is a perfect example of how colored pencils should be used. There are very few places of the paper that are completely saturated. Texture is important, it gives the drawing life, and in no place do you clearly see pencil strokes. It still has the traditional media feel but is very well blended, the artist allows the paper to "breathe". I doubt even an artist of this caliber could make the same thing on computer paper. Or if she can, I would be even more in awe. Like you mentioned, computer paper is not at all forgiving when it comes to erasing, and is not very durable.

Ah yes, I see your point.
I understand the "Feelings" of how color pencils play and use in various manners.
I See, I actually studied Color Pencils from a popular pencil artist Janie Gildow, her work always blow me away. Though some of my works I done In her ways were destroyed (long story).

I took no offenses in your opinion ^_^ I actually see where you are going when you link me that beautiful work, awesome. -And faved
I could actually go back into drawing again with colors even though Graphite is my close friend, and about computer papers... Lets just let it have it's own way

Graphite is awesome! I think a LOT of people here could really benefit from learning how to solidly work with graphite before even stepping into color at all! Although I think that learning everything a little bit at once is the best way, concentrating on graphite can do wonders. I need to do it soon. What happens when you work with color variation and stuff like that for a long time, or at least that's what's happening to me, is that you forget about proper values. For some reason it's happening to me only in traditional and not in digital media though. Maybe it's just easier to go back and fix things in photoshop and make them darker, which you sometimes can't touch anymore on traditional drawings.

msilvestre In reply to shinigamigirl [2009-01-12 05:08:10 +0000 UTC]

I work with traditional art whole hearty and down to the soul.
I never use photoshop to edit or add anything to my work, only lighting adjustments and cropping when I up load with my camera (I don't have a scanner).
Ive been working with graphite since I was a kid! It have taught me a lot of lighting Perspective and 1 dimension to 3 dimensional.
I still have to keep up with color though, especially blending in between.
I'm amazed how some CG artist are so... Outstanding in there work but have never touched a pencil!
I like to stick with the old tradition, but use CG work as a play around.
