Checked again, it's definitely red. The only time it was green was when Brainiac had control of it.

Which they probably do. He does control Backpack with his mind, after all.

It wouldn't be too far-fetched if, considering Backpack is an AI, they "spoke" to each other.

Help me out if I'm wrong, but I think in the two seasons Richie was Gear, I can count on only one hand how many times he got a chance to be heroic on his own with being Static's go-to guy.
"Gear" where he saves Virg from Ebon
"Fallen Hero" where he retaliates against imposter!Green Latern for mopping up the floor with Static's butt
"Kidnapped" where he confronts and battles Virgil for Static's illegal activites while under pressure from Omnara.
*Sigh* only in the world of fandom can dear Richie live up to his potential as the hero Gear.
