Description Name: Barth

Age: Late twenties/early thirties

Race: Breton

Affiliation: Dark Brother (Listener)

Bio: Barth is the son and only heir to a family of wealthy merchants in Riften. When he was 10 years old, his parents were murdered by bandits while they were traveling. Barth was informed of this by the Jarl’s guards. They gave him a moment to himself and for him to pack his things before he was escorted Honorhall Orphanage in Riften. He was there for 8 years and had to deal with abuse and poor treatment by the hands of the cruel woman who ran the place. Him and the children used to secretly talk about how much they wanted to see the old bat get what’s coming to her. When he eventually grew old enough to leave the orphanage, inherit his parent’s business and estate, he did his best to turn his life around and work as hard as he could. Barth is considerably generous and has been known from time to time to visit some of the kids at the orphanage when Grelod, the owner, wouldn’t notice. He has yet to adopt any of them due to his work and the fear of the child having to go back to the orphanage if something were to happen to him in his travels. His entire life changed the day he was hired to deliver some supplies to Windhelm. While in the town, he heard rumors about a boy named Aventus who had returned from Honorhall Orphanage to his old house. His mother had died not too long ago and people suspected he was trying to summon a group of assassins by the name of the Dark Brotherhood. Despite warnings against going into the house, Barth made his way in, hoping to possibly reason with the kid. He found Aventus performing a ritual, the Black Sacrament, in order to summon the assassins. When Barth tried talking to the kid, he mistakes him for the Dark Brotherhood and explained that he wanted Grelod the Kind killed.

Barth was shocked by this, but wanted to help the kid out. He told the kid he would go and see Grelod, but he didn’t tell Aventus he had no intention to kill her. After he had finished his job in Windhelm, he traveled back to Riften. The next morning he went to the orphanage to talk to Grelod. He hoped that he could adopt Aventus and make him forget about the whole assassination. When he went in, Grelod was yelling at the children, just as she did every day. He walked up to her and expressed interest in adopting Aventus. She simply laughed at him and started insulting him. The insults soon got personal as she made fun of his parents. Something in him snapped. Barth’s expression went blank and then... in the middle of her sentence... an ice spike went through her chest. She collapsed to ground, dead. Barth snapped out of it and realized that the spike had come from his own hand. He freaked out and quickly fled the orphanage, making sure nobody saw him. He hid away in his home for several days, unable to comprehend what he had just done. News quickly spread about Grelod’s death, and it reached a specific group’s ears.

Barth received a letter nailed to his door. It had a black handprint on it with the words “We know” written on it. His paranoia grew and he decided to barricade himself in his home. Until one night when a little girl came to him, it was storming and she claimed to be lost. Taking pity on her but still being somewhat paranoid, he allowed her to come inside and have tea with him. He let her sit down and he went to double check all of his locks. When he came back he sat with the girl and took a sip of his tea. It didn’t take long for him to start feeling drowsy... in fact, the whole room was spinning. The last thing he saw before passing out was the girl grinning at him.

Barth awoke in a cold and dark cabin, coming face to face with Astrid, the leader of the Dark Brotherhood. She explained that he had stolen a contract from them and that he needed to repay it by killing someone else. She revealed the three people kneeled in front of him and just like before, his expression went blank and he killed one of the three. This pleased Astrid and she extended an invitation to join the Brotherhood. After being released from the cabin and having several weeks to think it over... he eventually went searching for their hideout.
