Well iuno sometimes I just start by drawing on the paper and see how it ends.
But most of the time it's just scribbling on the paper and coming out with a few thumbnails and characters. That's when it kicks in =X But for this artwork it was the picture of a masquerade mask that gave me the idea XD

yeah, i actually do the same but it usually starts with me drawing my character and then i create designs on the clothes, the page, the hair so it ends up looking really messy

Maybe you could just draw it as a small thumbnail first then later on do a cleaner version on a different paper? =X
