Little sketch I did before reading Goliath. Scott mentioned that Alek was probably about two inches shorter than Deryn (who is apparently BARKING 5'10"!!)Feel free to play with this sketch, or color it, or whatever!

Dylan's smirk was less frightening than the evil crinkle around his eyes. "You're shorter," he said.
"Shorter," Bovril repeated.
"I am *not* dressing as a girl," Alek said firmly.
"I'm too tall," Dylan crowed. Was he gloating?
"So am I!" Alek shouted. "If you haven't noticed, the women in Tokyo are extremely small and delicate!"
"Aye," Dylan said, his skin going a bit pale. "I feel like a proper giant."
"Delicate," said Bovril. Dylan flushed as Alek looked between them. There was something he didn't understand going on, but hardly the time to waste on it.
"You wrists are thin enough," he grumped. "Perhaps you could walk on your knees."

5'10" was gigantic during that time, but I guess in steampunk world, anything goes (I'd love a few of those inches, personally. I'm 5'2.5" and the rest of my family is 5'6" and up. I need a few inches!) I'm sure Alek, in about two or three years, will be taller than Deryn and Deryn will have to think of some other excuse to not wear a dress. It would be horribly embarrassing to Alek, the poor boy, if he had tp live the rest of his life shorter than the love of his life. I'm sure Deryn would LOVE it, but Alek wouldn't. His Former Majesty needs to be a bit taller.

Yes, the top shelf, especially the one at the grocery store. The one that's slightly unsteady and you really need that one thing on the top shelf. Therefore, you are stuck debating whether you want to risk your life for that ONE thing you need on the top shelf or feel worthless and ask somebody TALLER to get it for you. I'm sorry, I'll take risking my life or thinking up of some ingenious plan to get the thing on the top shelf. I hate it when people just grab it for me and smile and say, "Here you go." I want to smack that grin off their face. Hello! I was getting to grabbing my item, thank you! I was simply thinking of the easiest and least harmful way of grabbing it. I didn't need you, thankyouverymuch. I have a bit of a Napoleon complex sometimes.

LOL. Being self-sufficient is important. Generally, I don't mind if other people are just trying to be nice. Only when they have that slight superiority or "aww" look on their face (and they're strangers) does it ever bother me.

It's always the "aww" look with me. It would be one thing if it were a cute, single male (I mean really, at least I'd know he was helping a cute damsel in distress), but it's always the ugly, MARRIED men. Bleh.

I know! I was like "REALLY? Scott, are you sure?" Because 5'10" isn't just tall "for a girl of her time" like he said...it's tall for a girl NOW. That's, like, model-tall. And as we know, most of us aren't model-tall. :/ Come to think of it, a modern Deryn would probably be pretty well proportioned for a model--tall, skinny, with no diddies to speak of. XD
