Description I spent all day working on these beads...

The Calfornia rolls were made with the help of 's sushi cane tutorial.

The nigiri are the same kinds (and about the same size) as the ones that were on my small sushi tray sculpture - squid (ika), shrimp (ebi), tuna (maguro), egg (tamago), salmon (sake) and crab (kani).

I have LOTS of these beads... over 100 of the California rolls, and 42 of the nigiri (seven of each kind). They're strung onto clear elastic.

This particular bracelet with two sets of nigiri is a little big... I mean, my wrists are pretty big and it was sliding around a little too much for comfort.

But I made another one that fits a lot better - on one half, there are the nigiri, spaced by one roll in between, and then once you get past that section the other half of the bracelet is all rolls (which could go underneath your wrist, I suppose). So on that one, it's just one set of six nigiri on the "top" of the bracelet with the rest being filled in by rolls. it fits a lot better, but it doesn't look as nice as this one. However, it'd make it convenient if I wanted to sell these... I could take off beads or add beads to make it fit a customer's wrist.

If I sold these, it'd be a limited edition sort of thing... there would be six bracelets to sell, I guess, since I want to keep one for myself. XD; I don't know if I'd want to make sushi cane beads again... it was hard work and it took up a lot of clay, plus probably a good 1/4 of the beads came out wrong and were scrapped. I don't mind making nigiri, though... they are slightly harder work, but I could do bracelets out of just nigiri, I guess. It's just the shrimp ones I hate making. D:

EDIT: I put all of the bracelets together today... they are the second pattern, not pictured here, but I talked about it *points* up there. With just one set of nigiri. Wouldn't you know it, I ended up using every single california roll bead I had except ONE. I nearly made the exact number I needed. I didn't even MEAN to... that's just how many came out of the cane looking decent and not completely malformed. Lucky, eh?

So anyways, when I get my shop set up, I will have (possibly) 6 of them ready to sell, limited edition. (I say "possibly" because there is a good chance I will end up giving one or two as gifts.) I'm not sure how much I'll charge for them... any ideas? How much would you pay for this, not knowing how much work went into it? Or on the other hand, KNOWING how much work went into it...

I don't have any of those beads left... they've all been made into bracelets exactly like this one so that is what you would have to buy. Sorry about that.

Currently, I don't have a way to sell online, but I am trying to work on opening up an Etsy account. When I do I'm going to try and go back and contact anyone who ever said they wanted to buy any of my jewelry to let them know it's available...

Well, this is elastic... if you use elastic and beads, you can make the bracelet small enough to fit your wrist.

That is so cute. I bet you could sell those, they're very cute. And I can also see where you'd hate making the shrimp,

Aww, thank you.

The more I make the shrimp, the easier it gets, though. It was more of a pain the second time I tried to do it... not the first time, because the first time was an accident. But then I tried to replicate it right afterwards and it didn't come out as well. I figured out a way to do it, though, and I made 7 of them yesterday. It's still a pain. XD

It completely boggles me that you can make such small beads so detailed. @_@ Seriously, they're great! (and I'd be interested in buying one! :3)

Though, these I wont make an eating comment for because I don't like sushi. XD Hooray!

Oh, well, the rolls, um, you'd have to see the tutorial, but basically it's this techinque called caning. You make a bunch of tubes, then put them all together, and then roll that big tube of tubes out smaller and smaller... so the detail isn't difficult at all. The rice is actually several tubes of translucent clay wrapped in a layer of white, so you get the seperate grains.

You don't like sushi? DD: Awww. It's my favoriiiiite. (Clearly.)

Man... that is AWESOME... I'd totally wear that all the time. Did you use clay that self-hardens or clay that you have to fire? And how much would it be for one?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ShiversTheNinja In reply to AgentDarkmoon [2008-04-06 01:51:06 +0000 UTC]

It's polymer clay, which you fire in a normal oven. I use Sculpey brand clay but there's also Fimo and some other brands.

I'm not sure exactly how much I'd charge for one of these... $15, maybe? I'm not selling anything just yet, though.
