My thoughts on Watamote, introverts, and extroverts:
If you haven't heard of the series, it follows a high school student with severe anxiety and social disorders. Although it has some "funny" moments, I do not consider this anime to be a comedy. It is emotional, and should not be taken as a joke.
In the show, Tomoko relishes even the smallest of social interactions. As an introvert, I can relate. Imagine being ignored, having no one to talk to, not getting any texts, having zero notifications on Facebook... it is not fun. Any form of acknowledgment from fist bumps to compliments can change someone's mood. What makes this series so unique is how genuine it feels. The facial expressions, reactions, and thoughts of Tomoko are spot-on.
Also, this show can be a real eye opener for extroverts. Some extroverts believe an introvert does not like to talk and prefers being alone to having friends. Maybe a quiet person is just waiting for someone to talk to them. Maybe they don't speak because no one asks them to. No one likes to be alone. It's more difficult for an introvert to escape loneliness because many introverts have trouble initiating conversation (I know I do). Introverts need a reason to interact. They will speak when they have something to say.
So, my message is simple: Cast away your misconceptions, and give introverts a chance. You might be surprised and find a loyal, thoughtful friend. One conversation could change a person's day.
