Description
Atop the easternmost reach of the Throne's upper layers lies Chormia, a vast continent made of brass and steam. As one of the most technologically-advanced regions in the Foundation, as well as the first to invent mechanized space travel, there is no doubt that the future of Chormia is a promising one.
In contrast to much of the Foundation's other inhabitants, Chormians are bubbly, whimsical and good-hearted (with few exceptions, of course). Their bodies are often assembled from various machinations - some messier than others - and this can vary greatly depending on which region in Chormia they originate from.
Chormia's capital of space travel is the station town of Port Vurmia, which lies beyond a ridge that drops off into the heart of space. As a massive trading and traveling hub, Port Vurmia is filled with a daily arrival and departure of tens to hundreds of spaceships, ferrying across the Foundation's great cosmos in pursuit of discovery, often returning with a bounty of knowledge.
Thought it may be the capital of space travel, Port Vurmia is not the actual capital of Chormia. That would be Orchet, which resides some hundred miles northeast of Port Vurmia - a smaller region, but no less sophisticated in science. And it is here that lies a very peculiar family: the Coppeli family - renowned for their incredible cosmic discoveries and masterful navigation through the stars. But tragedy struck when the two most important figures of the family, Narpelli and Ceshelo, disappeared after an expedition which they were meant to arrive back from in a week - which was 20 years ago. Now presumed dead, their children, Ergo and Cornet, carry on their parent's legacy... as best as they can, at least.
Family and Friends
Aunt Drewla: Ceshelo's older and grouchier sister. Aunt Drewla is the leading Administrator of all of Orchet’s space travel. All Orcheschian spaceship-related permits reach her office, one way or another.
Ever since the disappearance of Narpelli and Ceshelo, Aunt Drewla took responsibility for raising Ergo and Cornet. Despite her crabby and irritable granny attitude, she has a genuine soft spot for the two sons, and has used her space-faring knowledge to raise them into fully-fledged explorers. She hopes they will not suffer the same fate as their parents.
Now too old to perform any lively maneuvers, Drewla currently spends the rest of her life tucked away in the Grand University of Orchet, documenting and approving hundreds of papers to expeditions and studies, which she stashes atop shelves like a library.
Brumper: When you're simply too old to walk, you make the office table walk for you. And there is no other table out there as obedient as Brumper, who goes wherever and stashes whatever Aunt Drewla commands. Brumper is also capable of multiplying its height, and Aunt Drewla will often command Brumper to rise to the ceiling so she can be left alone. On very rare occasions, however, he can become disobedient - usually in times when Ergo visits the office and distracts Brumper with pats and whistles, much to Aunt Drewla’s annoyance.
Captain Ergo: Both loved and hated (but mostly hated) within the Chormian scientific community, Captain Ergo treats space discovery as a sport more than a science. With his adventurous and indomitable attitude, he's willing to ignore standard space travel precautions just to make discovering more fun. Ergo's documentations of space have proven so valuable that there's been debate if he should be punished for his actions or granted an exception from the rules. Aunt Drewla, of course, is extremely tempted to penalize him from all space travel, but cannot push herself to do it. The least she can do is thunderously scold Ergo's actions every time he returns to visit the Grand University.
Unsurprisingly rich, Ergo had spent almost all his funds on a staggeringly massive spaceship, named the Brass Gallant. He has been conducting this ship for many years, until discovering his brother, Cornet, had just barely afforded a much more diminutive spaceship, named Cloud Copper. Out of sympathy, Ergo traded Cornet his luxurious Brass Gallant for the tiny Cloud Copper, and has been piloting the tiny ship ever since. He doesn't really mind it - the more rickety, the more risky, the more adventurous. He is accompanied by Whill during his travels - a powerful assistant who had been helping him since his time in the Brass Gallant.
Captain Cornet: The young brother of Captain Ergo and the new conductor of the Brass Gallant. Captain Cornet's discoveries may not be as impactful or revolutionary as his sibling's, but he makes up for it by being vastly more mature and concise. With his mannerly demeanor, Cornet strives to make every day of his life a dedication to his parents. Cornet's documentations are extremely well cataloged, written, and published, and thus, it may come off as a surprise to some that he is not very famous, largely since his brother is hogging the spotlight.
Cornet has recently constructed a son named Trill who is fascinated by space travel, but seems more inclined to becoming a musician instead. Unfortunately, due to the constant business of Cornet's life, Trill doesn’t get to interact with Cornet very often, and thus is usually under the care of Ergo or Lumellay instead. Cornet is very aware of his lack of interaction with his son and dearly wishes for more free time eventually.
Lumellay: Lumellay’s kind isn’t native to Chormia. In fact, her race is reportedly very rare. She is a mannequin: an agelessly immortal, non-reproductive race with obscure origins. Not even Lumellay understands the secrets of her race, but would rather not worry about it, choosing instead to just focus on life as it flows by. As a result, she is easygoing and calm-spirited, and doesn’t really have a goal or direction in life.
Cornet and Lumellay first met many years ago in the Orchet countryside. During which, Lumellay spent most of her days weaving fabrics. The two were great friends, until Cornet was required to leave in order to pursue academics. It was almost 10 years later when they crossed paths again, and they haven’t lost touch with each other ever since. It’s a clear sign they’re lovers.
Nowadays, Lumellay happily spends her time raising Trill - and occasionally Wynd - whenever Cornet and Ergo are both simultaneously absent from Orchet. Additionally, she has recently picked up cello playing. Her music is a big inspiration for Trill’s desires to become a musician.
Trill: The youngest member of the Coppeli family, Trill is still learning his basics. He is shy but very eager for adventure, often pretending to act braver than he actually is.
On lucky occasions, Cornet or Ergo will bring Trill along with them in their space voyages if they have the time and room for it. For Trill, space will never get old, and he enjoys the most out of these opportunities. But since Trill mostly stays in Orchet with Lumellay, he usually focuses on practicing his drum skills, or staring up at the stars during nighttime while waving his favorite toy around in his hands: a miniature sculpture of the Brass Gallant.
Whill: An unusually bulwark Threadlandian individual born in the copper streets of Wumbertin. Whill first met the Coppeli family as a steam worker on board the Brass Gallant. His obedience, sheer strength, and mysteriously quiet nature were such good qualities that Ergo had selected him out of all the workers to assist his trips aboard the “minimum two-persons required to pilot” Cloud Copper. Now, after spending so many years with Ergo, he’s also become a Butler- and his quietness certainly hasn’t changed.
Wynd: An exceptionally talented weaver for her age, Wynd is the ecstatically bouncy daughter of Whill. Unlike her father, she is a very bombastic talker, and will go annoying lengths to chat about her favorite topics. She is also merrily rebellious, often breaking rules and refusing to go to bed at reasonable hours.
Wynd is slightly unusual for her silken body. Most Wumbertin folk comprise mainly of tin and robotics, but Wynd was built with additional Threadlandian components. Overall, Wynd’s cool with it.
Wumbertin and Orchet are actually very close to each other, which sometimes allows Wynd’s friends to visit. As always, Trill is haplessly dragged into the party by Wynd; she doesn’t always tell Lumellay in advance.
