Description
This is a 5x7 scratchboard than I finished today morning. It took me around 6 hours and I used a scalpel for most of it other than the hair.The reference is something that I had kept for drawing using graphite pencils. She is Rue from the movie Hunger Games.

Wow, this art is amazing. I've never seen a scratchboard thingy on deviantart yet. and its of rue,one of my many favorite characters in the hunger games series. (that i might say im a fan of.) I think this looks just like the person! By the pressure he/she put on the board made different indentions in the work. I think this is worthy of a museum. I have tried coping off of a picture like that and its not easy, This artist has major skills, and i think it deserves a critique so i give this artwork a 5 out of 5 stars for overall interpretation.

Scratchboards are clay coated masonite boards which has a black surface. When you scratch on it, the white clay underneath is shown and that is how the highlights are added.

I think it's really good, a perfect Rue, but I do think there's an awful lot of shadow.

Okay, can I just say RESPECT for this? Scratchboard is REALLY difficult to shade properly, let alone do and this is flawless.

Very beautiful textures and scratchwork. I don't usually see scratchboard, much less pictures of Rue, and I think you captured her expression perfectly. She is one of the few book characters I have actually felt bad for when they die. Is the reference picture from one of those movie character posters? If so, this looks very much like it. Well done.

Scratchboard is so beautiful in real life. There is a local artist who does "Sally Maxwell" who does great scratchboard. We have one of her originals. Your two scratchboard images are terrific. Hope to see more! Really love the fine details in the eye and lips here!
