I remember seeing that this past summer and being very impressed, although at the time I didn't know much about avatar since I just started watching it recently.
Amazing work for a first cosplay though!

It's amazing.
I wrote it off when it first came on, since most american animation, well, isn't all that great. Not the case here though

Honestly, I wrote it off because I strongly disliked anime at the time (now I tolerate it)--but that first episode really captured me

Haha, I don't blame ya. I actually find myself liking less and less anime as the years go on. Maybe it's my taste changing, maybe there's just too much with too little going for it.

I'm so glad you like my costume, and I appreciate your enthusiasm, but honestly(And I feel so horrible for saying this!) I would feel a little uncomfortable about my costume being coppied out-right. (it was my first costume baby! I'm a little protective). I am more than willing to help with individual elements of the costume--my costume certainly would not have been possible without outside help from others--and I will give all the help I can to make sure your costume goes smoothly, but I encourage you to come up with your own take of the character (there are a thousand and one ways to interpret 'realistic Suki'! I bet you could come up with one even better than mine!). It's way more fun that way, anyways!
I'm actually going to be offline untill the beginning April starting tomorow, so If you ever do need any help or anything, please don't hesitate to contact me at Sasham@softcom.net, which I will be checking frequently in the mean time!
Con in may--Fanime?

No worries! I totally understand where you're coming from.
I don't know how much of a help I'll be sewing-wise (I just started sewing myself. I had a LOT of help on the sewing for this one from my friend's mom.)--I'm more of a detail person, and everything that goes on the base sew--but I shall do my best!

welcome very much, it's true! The attention to detail (Not just plain green fabric for the undergarments of her uniform, the brocade is a lovely touch).
And your makeup alone is superior to what I've seen.
I love when Cosplayers interject a bit of their originality into a cannon costume!

sure thing!
On to the tutorial! (keep in mind that I have no clue what I'm doing when it comes to make-up. I just kind of made up this process as I went a long. This probably isn't the proper way to do things...and this might be a kind of long message. I'm bad at summery!)
(oh, and read all of the instructions first!)
What you'll need:
Red+white Ben Nye face paints
black liquid eyeliner (cheapy wet 'n' wild stuff works fine)
black pencil eyeliner (I'd go fo slightly better quality than Wet 'n' wild on this one, but you don't have to spend a mint either)
Red lipstic (again, wet 'n' wild works great)
some mascara if you have it.
So first, you're going to wash your face. Make sure it's all squaky clean!
Put on some moisterizer to make sure your skin, and in turn your make up, won't get all crackily during the day. And, this is going to sound weird, but take a tooth brush and rub the bristles on your lips. Seventeen magazine says that this expholiates them or something....all I know is that it takes off the crackily, chewed at top layer.
Now that your face is all primed, you can start on the face paint! But before we start:
Rule #1: Don't mix your face paint applicators. Have one for red and one for white. white face paint can get on the red one alright, but DO NOT get red face paint on your white face paint applicator. Otherwise, you'll have a pink face. When I do my face paint, I normally apply my red with a 1/2 inch paintbrush, and my white with a makeup wedge. this works well, because the brush is easy to manuver around my eyes and the wedge is disposable and comes in packs of like a billion if I get any red on it. But I'm sure there are other methods. Look around your house, and I'm sure you could find something that works!
anyways, first you need to put some red face paint on your eyelids. Make sure that you get the corners of your eye too! Then you're going to put white face paint along the bottom rim of your eye. This way your eyes are covered all the way around. (oh--just realized. Maybe you'll want to extend the facepaint out a little past the outer edges of the eye, and then sort of smudge them together where they meet with your finger) then you're going to want to take your liquid eyeliner and line your eyes in this fashion: [link] The whole "cat eye" thing, you know? Well, I guess you don't have to do it like that. I just think it makes the outer edges more polished. (this is why we put the face paint on the eyes first. The part that the eyeliner touches is already finished, and you don't have to worry about smudging your lovely liner!)
Next you're going to fill in your red face paint. Paint the paint up to your eye brows (but you know how eyebrows arch like 2/3 of the way through? Well, at the part where it starts to go down, rather than follow your eye brow there, go over it with a sweeping motion. Basically make a sweeping motion from your brow-arch to your temple.) follow this shape for the bottom edge as well. Then take your red from the corner of your eye, to the approx. place you want the red to end on the side of your nose. (picture linked to below for reference)
now we're going to the black upper-outline of the red. Take your black eye-liner pencil and trace the edge of your red paint. Then go and totally fill in your eyebrows (up to the point that you veer off. Jut sort of gradually taper off as you follow that veering line).Square off theplace where your eyebrows begin, and make a triangle attatched the bottom of the square, pointing down. Extend the downwards-pointing end to mid-way down your nose on both sides, sort of following the natural curves of your nose.
that sounds confusing to me, so here's a picture that might sort of clear up what I'm talking about:
[link] (my makeup looks sort of worn-out here from wearing it all day, but you get the gist I hope!) If it doesn't come to a perfect point when you first draw it, don't worry! you can fix it when putting on white paint.
Now you're going to fill in all the rest of the white paint. Just cover the bulk of your face and forehead. Be careful not to really touch the red too. If there's like a millimeter gap that's probably okay since you'll be blending there. Get super duper close up to your black lining. If you smudge it, you can always fix it later with more black or whatevs.
Now take your red-paint applicator and wipe off the excess red. You'll never get all of it, but you don't need to. Take your brush and dabble it around the area where your red and white meet, blending it around. No big strokes. Widen the blending as you get further from the eye.
So now you've got the facepaint pretty much finished! Apply the red lipstick, and put white facepaint on the under-side of your jaw and neck (and if your hair is short like mine, the back of your neck too.)
Now you're ready for the con!
final step? take pictures and send them to me! I'd love to see how it works for you!
Hope that helped!

woah, that was great explanation! thanks! just one more question, what kind of ben nye make up? did u get the cake or the liquid or the pallet or...I don't even know wat else there is

I don't really know what it'd be considered, but I'm thinking cake? It comes as a little circular disk, and is fairly solid.

first, thank you so much! I'm really glad you like it!
Yep, I used ben-nye for the main color base. Overall, it worked pretty well, though it didn't have quite as pure of a coverage as I would have liked for the white. In most pictures and from a decent distance, it looks fine, but there are a few shots were my face looked a little purple, and I had to fix it in photoshop. Still, worked pretty well in general.
On to the tutorial! (keep in mind that I have no clue what I'm doing when it comes to make-up. I just kind of made up this process as I went a long. This probably isn't the proper way to do things...and this might be a kind of long message. I'm bad at summery!)
