Description "Though less famous than her smaller self-propelled cousins, the Db Type 5 railway artillery carriage was perhaps the most influential on the course of the decades-long campaign in the extensively fortified Misa region. In addition to her redoubt-crushing siege gun, the type's ample gun service and machine shop decks often served as a secondary maintenance and field-service facility for rear echelon vehicles and equipment."

Digital painting in photoshop, from my original pencil sketch design which I modified along the way. Not my fastest work, but I found the end result satisfying.

it looks like a future concept of the Germen rail gun lol.

I might use your drawing to try emulate the texturing (which I am still poor at) to apply to my concept stuff, you know the white lines that make metal look like real metal. You paid a lot of attention to individual lighting on the individual components as well as reflected light from other components which gives the overall feel of the drawing.

Sorry to get back to you late - but thanks for enjoying my work!
Did you have any luck rendering metal texture?

Nowadays I have a full time job so I am down to posting sketches and finishing up old drawings.

I have done it before with the Hammerhead, especially on minigun and main gun though limited in scope:

This will make a great unit in some Command and Conquer style game. 'All friendly units parked near the Railway gun will repair automatically'.

Gorgeous pic . The weapon looks fantastic but historically speaking this sort of weapon did not perform well .

Nice man! And I should say, it really actually looks like The German Dora Railway Gun. Not 2 lied but I'm being serious man,it really does, like its an future of a Newer Version Model of The German Dora Railway Gun.

This would have the same psychological effect as Nukes only this thing level an entire town with the fear of fall out or nuclear retribution. Mutually Assured Destruction; perhaps only for the other side.

Oh my, big gun.
Hey lookie! Armored soldiers!
..Wait - Mechs.
...
Um, are those trees on the front?
HOW HUGE IS THIS THING? 0_0
A merely kinetic round should easily level city blocks, forget HE!
Dang - maybe it's intended to have a Grand Slam-style effect?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shrinecat In reply to ScrapFish [2011-09-06 02:41:26 +0000 UTC]

I hoped to make a gun that was an analog in scale to mechs, as historic railway guns were to people. What sort of targets could possibly be large and hardened enough to justify such an absurd thing? I leave it to the viewer's imagination :>

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

ScrapFish In reply to Shrinecat [2011-09-06 23:23:02 +0000 UTC]

I'd say you've made the mech-analog cannon - and maybe overdid it even. That thing could pierce any nuclear bunker from here to Timbuktu and back again.

Impressive. Railway guns may have proven inefficient in warfare, but there's something so wonderful about a nice big railroad gun.

Shrinecat In reply to HaroldPotter [2011-09-06 02:26:45 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! - I'm of the mind that inefficient, extremes in specialization can make for the most interesting set pieces. Its those handicaps that make the strengths stand out, or something like that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HaroldPotter In reply to Shrinecat [2011-09-06 02:43:24 +0000 UTC]

Sort of like giant robots in anime or mass-produced powered armors. Inefficient? Yes. Impractical? Totally. Attention-grabbing, awesome, and indicative of a setting? Hells yeah.

xxVectorZeroxx [2011-09-05 21:13:37 +0000 UTC]

got to love it.
i assume you based it on the old german WWII super artillery?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shrinecat In reply to xxVectorZeroxx [2011-09-06 02:34:06 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad you like it!

I'm a bit of a machine/weapon fan... so while I can't point out a specific 'base' idea, there are any number of inspirations (conscious and not) from historic rail artillery, battleships, real trains/locomotives, ironclads, anti-aircraft guns, and a childhood of too many video games.

Shrinecat In reply to JaredtheFox92 [2011-09-06 02:46:44 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I considered converting it to a tracked piece, but in the end, I think the limitations of it being on rails add a certain interest and archaic charm.

Thanks - it was good exercise in metal rendering anyway. I figured that, with something of this scale theres not much point in trying to camouflage it anymore right? Haha...

Thanks! Its a different concept than when I started out with -- which was actually a sort of steampunk railway gun.
