Some photographers will tell you to invest in a tripod to prevent that, but its really not all that practical lugging a tripod everywhere you go ive found... plus it means there are no 'spur of the moment' pics

I'm not worrying, I actually like the effect quite a bit, otherwise I wouldn't have posted it. Good to know the mighty photographic elite goes through that from time to time 
I've got a tripod but just like you say, it's not only unpractical to carry but also quite hard to adjust in some circumstances.
Did some nightshots a few days ago and it was a pain in the a$$..
