Description As the moon of misfortune
hung near zenith in a pencil grey sky
I looked into an ocean vast and deep,
whose shore I stood upon,
and I looked at only the reflection
of that which disturbed its peace;
I looked at only the reflection
and did not know its source was real;
I looked at only the reflection
and believed its light shone only on me
from the depths of an immesurable sea.

As the moon of misfortune
hung near zenith in a pencil grey sky
and blotted out the stars
with its waxed face
large and bloated,
I cast a single pebble
into the water before me
and watched the reflection shatter,
replaced by rippling blue,
shining and beautiful.

As the moon of misfortune
hung near zenith in a pencil grey sky,
still water returned to stillness,
and the reflection did return,
so I looked to my feet
to cast another stone,
yet all about me was steel and wave;
so I looked to the sky
and saw above my head
an ancient and battered grin.

As the moon of misfortune
hung near zenith in a pencil grey sky
I stood at the water's edge,
afraid of its depths,
I stood at the water's edge,
and my arms could not grasp
the snickering moon,
though I so wished it to wane
and return to its horizon,
to never hang its highest.
