Description
So, you're probably wondering what happened to me when I got out of the hospital. Are Dianglea and I dating? No, not at this point in the story line, but trust me, you might want to stick around, it's going to get interesting.
"Mom ! I told you Diangela and I are not together, we're just friends."
This, to the average human, would seem like a normal conversation about girls between a mother and her teenage son, but I'm not so sure. I think she may have a point. (this doesn't really make sense)
"Are you sure Ry? She seemed to be a little too worried about you at the hospital the other day," she responded
" Well maybe that's because I had a ten inch piece of glass shoved in my ribcage," I said with sarcasm.
"Ryan, if there's one thing I know about girls nowadays, it's that most of them don't really know how to hide their feelings. Which is why they go for boys you are too blind to see them. " She turned around with a smile on her face.
I smiled and said "Yes that's true, now that you mention it."
Then I realized what exactly she'd meant "HEY!"
------------------
That night I did a bit of thinking about what mom had said. I realized she was actually kind of right, Dianglea was a little more affectionate than usual . Then again most people are when some sort of tragedy happens, but not in the way she was.
The next day was the first day back at school and I knew everyone would be crowding me, asking me questions like "Ooh Ryan are you alright?" or "Oh Ryan what happened?"; acting like they cared. But I decided that my main point was to see Dianglea, it would be the highlight of my day.
When I arrived things were exactly how I expected, people were at me nonstop about that previous summers happenings and the Troy incident.
I saw Dianglea in the hallway at lunch time as she came up to me.
"Hey, I haven't spoken to you since you dropped me off at my place from the Hospital, where have you been?" she asked
"Oh I've been healing. " I gestured to my scar from the glass on my lower right side.
"And you couldn't pick up a phone and call me, god Ryan are you that lazy?" she laughed.
"Um, no," I said looking a little sad.
"Ok Ryan what's going on? And don't tell me it's nothing cause you can't fool me," she said with concern.
"Ok I'll tell you, how 'bout the beach, after school?" I suggested.
"Isn't it a little cold?" she exclaimed.
"Oh come on Di, you're the one who likes to go out in shorts in the middle of winter," I respond
"This is true," she said, nodding her head and smiling.
I didn't bother to wait for Diangela after school because I didn't think she would want me to, so I decided to go straight to the beach. As I sat in the sand I found my fingers making for straight lines in the sand as I brought them behind me to support my back.
"Hey, Zuke," a voice from behind me said, and I turned around to see Diangela standing at the end of the gravel path that led back to the road.
"You've been avoiding me, what's going on Ry--" she begins to say then I cut her off.
"That kiss, what did it mean to you?" I asked, cutting her off.
"What kiss?" she said pausing to think. "Oh that… I was just really glad you were ok," she mindlessly responded
"Are you sure?" I asked in disbelief
"I think so…why? What do you think it meant?" she asked
"Oh, I thought the same," I said with a smile that showed I was clearly lying.
"You better tell me Ryan. 'Cause I know you're lying," she said putting her finger close to my face threateningly.
I got up and walk to the other side of her. "Ok you're right I am lying, but you're going to have to catch me to get it out of me." Then I took off running.
"You're horrible," she said as she got up and came after me, laughing.
We ran about a kilometre down the beach until she caught me and we ended up hugging.
We looked into each other's eyes and I kiss her softly.
"Payback's a bitch," I whispered as we briefly broke from the kiss. ------------------
After that night you would have thought one of us would have ask the other out, but no that didn't happen. We walked down the beach hand in hand talking about everything; she told me about how she wanted to call me but didn't want to stress me out. She understood why I didn't call her.
"Thanks for the awesome night Ryan," she said with a smile as we embraced.
"My pleasure, I feel like a got a lot off of my chest."
"Me too," she said as she walked up her drive. "I'll see you tomorrow"
"Night," I said as I began to walk off .
The next day ,I had a spare right before lunch so I decided to indulge in my nerd-side and go to the library--I had nothing better to do with my time and all of my other friends were in class. As I was walking down the concrete stairs to my destination, I found myself suddenly a few metres away from none other than Diangela, who was coming out of the library with a TV for her class.
"Hey," she said cheerily
"Yo," I said without thinking
"Boy, am I never saying that again," I said as I turned around to speak to her again.
Then, almost instantly, she turned around, flirtatiously giggled and continued walking back to class.
Now you would think after that happened I would have offered to help her with the TV but again you would be mistaken .What I did instead was let my embarrassment genes get to me. I ran to sit down at a table with my head hidden in a book to hide my blushing face. All I could remember thinking was how that couldn't have gone any worse.
-------------
"Truth be told I don't know what I want to do," I told my friend Courtney Michelle the next day as were sitting at lunch. "I mean everything since the hospital and that first kiss has been one confusing mess."
"Ryan… I think you like her," she said with a smirk " You just don't want to admit it , you want my advice , I think you should tell her."
"But the thing is I already did , the other night on the beach," I said, feeling stressed out.
"Well tell her again, and this time mean it." Her eyes suddenly widened. " Oh, look here's your chance."
I turned around to see Diangela heading in our direction .
"Hey, you guys," she said with a smile.
"Uh…uh, hi, " I stammered stupidly.
Then suddenly Courtney kicked me under the table.
"I mean hey," I said correcting myself.
"Of course you did pea brain," she said as she sat down.
"Oh, shut up," I chuckle.
"Don't tell me to shut up," she said as she slapped my arm lightly.
"You did not just slap me!" I said with a smile
"Oh, don't be such a wimp," she responds.
"Okay, as cute as you two are , it's making me sick watching you flirt. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go vomit. Ryan, remember what I told you, time is everything," Courtney said as she got up and began to walk away.
"Alright I won't. And—thanks. I'll talk to you later," I responded
"Time is everything? What's that about?" Diangela asked as soon as Courtney was out of ear shot.
"Well," I chuckled nervously, "I have something to ask you."
"What might that be?" she asked suddenly interested.
"Would you like to go out with me?" I asked with one breath of air.
"Took you long enough," she said. "I thought for sure you were going to ask me back on the beach. Of course, I'd love to."
"Well, sorry if I kept you waiting," I said as I shifted my position to face her.
"That's perfectly fine," she said as she wrapped her arms around me.
I began to lean in to kiss her.
"You're taking too long," she whispered in my ear .
"I'm a slow person." I said as I kissed her.
---------------
They say when a new couple forms they go into what's sometimes called the "Honeymoon Phase", in which they are completely inseparable for up to two weeks, or more depending on the intensity of the relationship. However, for Diangela and I, that didn't last very long at all.
For the first few weeks everything was fine, we had told our parents and friends we were dating and they were overjoyed, we even had plans to conveniently get our parents to plan the exact same camping trip to the same place, just so that we could go together . You might say we were the perfect couple. But it changed fast.
My phone rang, I picked it up off of my desk , and to my surprise it was Courtney.
"Hey, Court," I said as I answered.
"Ryan , I need you , can you come over?" she said in a stuffed up nasally voice.
"Sure, but what's going on?" I asked in concern.
"Just come over, I'll explain when you get here."
As soon as I closed my phone it rang again, that time it was Diangela.
"Hey !"
"Hey , I can't talk , I'm on my way to Courtney's, she's having a crisis, and I have to go help her."
"Oh, okay, what's the crisis, did she say ?"
"No she didn't, she sounded really upset, though."
"Well, do you want me to come over, too?" she asked. "Maybe I can help if it's girl stuff."
"No I think she'll be fine, I'll just go and talk to her for a bit, see what's going on, you know ?"
"Yeah , all right, call me after?"
"Sure, I love you."
"I love you, too."
That was the first time we ever said those three words to each other. Although it wasn't the way I would have liked.
-------------------
As soon as I arrived at Courtney's I found her curled up in a ball wrapped in a thick blanket with tears streamed down her face. She explained to me that she had been dating this guy she met at an athletics conference a couple months back, and that she had just found out he was cheating on her so she broke up with him.
"And what's worse is the fact that I thought for a second I was in love with him," she said ,her voice sounding cracked from so much crying.
"Well that's only instinct, you trusted him, you thought you knew him ,no one would blame you," I said comforting her.
"You think?" she asked with the beginnings of a smile at the corners of her mouth. "Oh, how selfish am I? How are you and Dianglea?"
"I do think, and we're great. How did you even know we were together, I didn't think I told you did I
"No you didn't, but I knew you guys were going to get together right after I left you at lunch that day."
"Damn you're good," I said, shaking my head.
We spent the rest of the evening talking and catching on our lives. When I got home I discovered that my phone had died while I was out that night. So I plugged it into the charger turned it on and discovered that there were several messages from Diangela. In each one she sounded more and more upset that I wasn't answering, even though she knew exactly where I was .I decided to call her and find out exactly what was going on.
Surprisingly I end up getting her answering machine.
"Hey, it's Di leave a message and I'll get back to you," her voice on the machine said.
" Hey, it's me, what's going on? Call me back."
But for as long as I was awake she never called back. So in the morning I went to school hoping to figure out what was wrong. As I walked along the side walk it began to snow, and I started thinking about what could possibly be wrong.
When I got to the school, I headed inside to my locker, which I happened to be sharing with Diangel, so I figured the chances of her being there would be pretty good.
I was right, she was with a group of her friends sitting on the ground next to our locker.
I walked up to them and realized some, if not most of them, were giving me dirty looks.
"Hey," I said sitting next to her, "what's wrong?"
"She doesn't want to talk to you right now," one of them said.
"Just please Ryan can you give me a bit, I'll talk to you after school, 'kay?" she said as she kissed my cheek. She looked as if she had been crying.
"Okay," I said as I got up and began walking down the hallway. "I love you."
I didn't expect her to say it back, not in the state she was in. It still hurt.
I decided to go straight home after school, before the snow got any worse. When I got home I told mom what was going on. She suggested I wait and talk to her tomorrow, not push it by rushing over to her place. Suddenly there was a knock at my front door, I opened it to find Diangela.
"Hey, can we talk?" she said looking to the floor, her hair and jacket covered in snowflakes.
"Sure , how does a walk sound ?" I asked with a smile.
"Good, let's go," she said in a tone that did not help my unease.
------------
As we walked down the street, she stayed several steps ahead of me and we didn't say a word.
"I thought we were supposed to be talking about something."
"Oh …yeah , sorry," she said. I could tell something was bothering her.
"What's going on Diangela, you've been avoiding me all day, and those dirty looks your friends where giving me earlier, what were those all about?" I said seriously.
"You're cheating on me with Courtney, aren't you? That's what all of this is about , you're late night hang-outs ,you won't tell me what was going on .That entire 'time is everything' situation, you never wanted me, you were only going to see how long you could last with me before you caved , I was just a bet between you two. You know what Ryan? That's fine, be with her. I only loved you, it's no big deal." She began to cry.
"Cheating…? Wha…? No! She just dumped her boyfriend ,and that time is everything situation was about you, she said I should tell you how I feel before you got some other guy," I replied with a wine.
"I don't believe you," she said leaning up again the snow filled fence.
"So is this you breaking up with me? And after all we've been through, you're just going to drop it all?" I asked, feeling upset that she could even say things like that.
"It's not like I have any other choice Ry, I don't know if I can believe you…I don't know if I want to," she said as she began to walk away.
"Can't you at least stay and talk to me so we can figure out what's going?" I answered.
"I love you Ryan but I just can't be with you anymore if you're going to lie to me ." She walked up to me, kissed me and began to walk away.
"Then I just have one more question," I said behind her. "Why?"
She turned her head and I could see the tears streaming down her cheeks melting the frozen snow, now covering her entire torso.
"Ryan you know why," she said, sobbing as she ran down the show filled sidewalk.
I all of a sudden dropped to my knees and the next thing I knew I was sitting in the middle of the sidewalk crying with snow falling on my jacket. And I knew Diangela was gone forever.
