Awesome job on their hair! I thought that it was in 3D until you said otherwise. You handled the shadows and lighting on it convincingly. The painted hair works well for a close, emotional moment like this scene. And lovely work on their pose and expressions. The tears look great, too (did you paint those on as well?)! Beautiful work, Shutdp! It's nice to see new work from you.

Thanks a lot for the kind words, I'm glad you like it so muchΒ Β
This time it was a lot harder to do the hair shading since I didn't have the 3D reference to get the correct colors and stuff like last time, so I kinda improvised, but I'm glad to see you thought it was 3D at first, that means I did it the right way lol
I forgot to mention the tears in the description, I tired adding them in-engine but they didn't look very good so I gave them a shot in photoshop with layer effects.
I noticed there's a small random red dot in it, I'll take advantage of that to bump up the resolution a bit Β

Is that a custom firefly model?

I used Rainbow Dash's enhanced model with Firefly's texture in this case to use the more complex flexes, but I do have an actual model of her. For the mane I followed the style of the comic this image is taken from so it's not the usual "same mane as RD" thing

I was just wondering how you made firefly's hair look like the comic design, cause i love dash academy and firedash, using that model

I just drew it myself, since in the render they were baldΒ Β
A model with the mane style of the comic would be cool though..

Wow then you did a damn good job
I'm "Surprise"-d,XD, that no one has done one yet with Dash Academy being so popular, maybe it will happen, one day

Understandable. It does look a bit weird to see drawn hair on a 3D image but it does also improve the look of it IMO. I wish Source had some more complex hair simulation but it's very old so that's a bit too much to ask. It would be possible with a newer engine (like UE4 or CryEngine) or even an actual Ray Tracing engine like Cycles, but I have no idea how any of those work so I guess I'm stuck with Source. Can't wait for Source 2, if it'll ever come out considering Valve Time
