More nostalgia with today's literary Inktober drawing. This time it's Jonatan and Karl Lionheart from The Brothers Lionheart by Astrid Lindgren. Interesting bit of children's literature in that, on the one hand, it offers a very simple black-and-white moral landscape, while on the other hand it is ridiculously dark and grim Probably one of the few novels targeted at preteens to feature suicide quite this prominently, too. I recently re-read this novel and was captivated by that contrast There's one throwaway scene I always found particularly memorable - a woman, recently widowed when her husband was executed, is asked why she is cutting her long hair. She just replies: "Bowstrings."
Also, the relationship between the brothers themselves is just
