Description This piece is based around the theme of rituals. In this way, the piece I️ have made is a sort of ritual because I️ find many a times that parents will force a specific career choice upon their children while attending school. When those children grow up and have children of their own, they may do to their children as their parents had done to them, and thus a cycle begins and rarely ends. This piece is based upon my personal experience as a school kid. My stepdad would force me and my sister to take all of these AP and pre-AP math and sciences classes in preparation for the doctors we were to be one day, but I️ didn’t want to be a doctor. I️ just wanted to do what I enjoy most. To further explain, the cycle can be a form of a ritual because when the children who were forced into a particular career by their parents have children of their own, they will go through the same motions or ritual that their parents had gone through with them. This piece is approximately 2 1/2' x 3' with approximately 1 cm wide squares of shredded paper glued down to the surface.

The texture is amazing! :0

I'm glad my parents never pushed me to do things I didn't want,

I mean aside from my Mum trying to make me dress girly...

Keep up your art, you got skills!

It's not up to your parents to choose what career you would like to pursue. If you want to be a doctor, great! If you want to be an artist, great! If you want to be [insert numerous types of careers], great! It's up to you in what you want to do in your life time. I feel that if you get to choose what you want in life, that you'd be happier. Fortunately my parents support me as a Singer,Actress,Dancer,Artist,Activist,Politician, ext. I don't know how your parents are, but maybe having a conversation with them, and explaining that you'd be happier doing [insert career], and explaining that it's your life and not theirs might help

That's very true.
All I can say is, my mother was understanding.
My stepfather often reduced me to tears when I tried to speak my mind about anything, even the simplest of things.

I'm glad your parents are supportive of your endeavors though.

It is a relief for me now though that after having finished my freshman semester of college,
I was finally allowed to change my degree to art education.
I was even luckier after my sophomore year of college that I was allowed to change my major to the degree my heart truly wanted,
which would be a degree in Studio Art.

Thanks, though it'd probably be a doctorates in Fine Arts. XDD
Luckily, my parents allowed me to change majors after my freshman year of college. ^-^
Yeah, that's always nice when parents don't do that.

There is a song that talks about this I've heard since I was a kid
It talks about a boy who wants to he a fireman, but each member of his family decides a different career for him. He turns into a lwayer and haves kids, but when he is grownup and alone he realizes he was never happy and now longs to fulfill a dream he can't reach anymore.
A pretty sad song, my mom sang it to me :/
My dad's a doctor and my parents did mention they would like me to be a doctor to, but they never tried to force me into anything. I'm sad that stuff happens tough, parents are supposed to want the best for their children but instead they supress them.
I keep disliking this step dad of yours :/, more and more...

Shy-Steamer In reply to DSeven-Archive [2017-11-17 03:23:53 +0000 UTC]

Aaw, what a sad song. :C

I'm sad that stuff happens too.
That's why I don't plan on being that sort of parent;
I want to support my kids and help them get the career they want most.

And yeah, in sixth grade, I wanted to be a vet because of my love for animals.
I told my stepdad I was going to be a vet when I grew up, and he said it wouldn't happen.
I wanted so bad to prove him wrong.
As the years passed, he used reverse psychology on me to make me think I wanted to be a doctor whenever I actually just wanted to be an artist.
It took until the end of the first semester of my freshman year in college for my parents to finally let go to school for the degree I truly wanted.

DSeven-Archive In reply to Shy-Steamer [2017-11-17 04:32:12 +0000 UTC]

Yeah :c
I doubt I have any, but I would do the same
At least in the end it worked ^^
I remember I wanted to be a vet to, I spend so many years with that dream (like four years I think?) but then I just change my mind into being a ninja (I'm serious)
Many parents want their children to be succesful, because they feel they weren't successful themselves and want to live through their children in some way.
I'm struggling to get my parents to change me to the school I want to go :/, but at least they support my dream of being an artist

True ^ ^

Wow! That's awesome!!! X3
(Do you know karate? )

That's true; I know I won't be that parent though. ^-^
I want my kids to live their own lives; I don't want to live their lives for them.

Well, hopefully you can persuade them.
I believe in you!!! >U<

(A little bit :I)
One day I'll be a ninja :,D
It's the right thing to do
But well I guess it changes if your kid wants to be a drug trafficant or something like that :v
Hopefully ^^
I really hope so

Don't let your dreams go!!! Fight for them!!!
Agreed.
Oh, yeah, there's that. XD
If my kids wanna be a drug lord or something, I'm gonna have to suggest they find another career. XDD
But good luck ^u^

Heh, I can relate to this since my mother didn't want me to take the 'artist' road and tried to put me down ever since, saying that my paintings are sh*tty and that I'll never get a real job with such 'good for nothing' drawings..
Haaaahhh, but you know what?! When I'm older, I'm not gonna pressure my kids into a job they won't choose themselves!!   Btw, I really really like this drawing!! (030)/

Shy-Steamer In reply to LITATO [2017-11-16 21:02:58 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, same here.
My stepdad doesn’t support art (my art), and it actually took until the end of my freshman semester for my folks to say I️ was allowed to get an art degree.
But you know what, where there’s a will, there’s a way (usually).
Same as you though, I️ won’t pressure my kids into the career I️ want them to have;
I’ll encourage them to get the career they love.

Thank you!!!
If you look really close, you’ll see all the tiny pieces of paper I️ shredded to make it. XDD
