The word koala comes from dharug, the indigenous language of the Sydney area (Australia), and means "does not drink". It had always been thought that koalas did not drink since they acquired all the necessary hydration through the eucalyptus leaves in their diet. Even so, koalas were recently observed licking tree trunks on rainy nights, behavior that might have previously gone unnoticed.
