Description A few months ago, Enchantermoonstone sent me an idea for a new hive that resides in graveyards. At first I didn’t want to do it because I figured I already had enough hives, but the idea was too cool to abandon, so I kept it stashed away in some txt file. Recently I found it again, and after some mulling over it, I figured “why not?". So let me present to you:

The Nekropolis Hive

The Nekropolis Hive and its queen Calliphora are probably one of the most elusive and least explored hives in all of Equestria. They make their home in graveyards, feeding off ponies’ love by posing as ghosts of dead relatives and loved ones. Their numbers are unknown.

Usually they move into already existing family graves and crypts and only set up rudimentary constructions and decorations. Although they use remains and coffins for this purpose, they don’t actually eat either of those to manufacture their building material, as many ponies believe. Instead it has been found their “changeling goo" is mostly composed of various moss and fungi types.

They have little to no contact with other hives and are actually often purposely avoided by them, for the simple fact that, even if it sounds unbelievable, even other changelings are creeped out by them.

Beside their macabre living conditions, the biggest reason for this are their appearance and their general behaviour. While they appear even more “perforated" than other changelings, with colours reminding of dead leaves and decaying matter, their most distinguishing and disturbing feature is what appears to be a second set of eyelids that they can close vertically and, while see-through, allows them to block out most light. This is important because the hive is almost exclusively nocturnal and thus reacts pretty badly to bright lights. Even their hive is kept in complete darkness (which is why they seldomly keep husks).

Their general behaviour has so far been described as “sort of otherworldly". They tend to buzz around with their second set of eyelids closed, seemingly without direction, or huddled in dark corners, humming quietly, as if listening to some inner voice. Perhaps this stems from the fungi they consume and the various gases present in a graveyard. Nevertheless the hive never falls into ruin or disarray. When an intruder appears, the hive is immediately at full alert and goes into attack mode without so much as a whisper. Many a pony has already found themselves thinking they just walked into a zombie pony attack when the coffin lid next to them flew off with a loud hiss.

One should take special precautions when a full moon is out. For some reason, it sends the hive into even more of a trance and a strange sort of dancing motion above the graveyard it currently resides in. Any intruder is immediately killed on sight, but one can usually tell and avoid these events by keeping a lookout for red eyes dancing in the sky like fireflies.

Some ponies refer to this hive as “the order of the fly", proving that they are rather superstitious, but given that anyone who would find themselves in the clutches of this hive would surely think themselves in Tartarus, it is somewhat understandable.

---------
Edit
Since a few people have asked about Calliphora's personality, here's a short blurb copy/pasted from an answer:
Calliphora is...unsettling. Usually silent, just observing, or seems to be somewhere entirely else with her thoughts, but then she suddenly focuses all her attention on you. Unpredictable. In the face of danger (to her or her hive), she becomes very aggressive, very fast. Likes to toy with others' minds at times. (See The Meeting  )

Question: if she and the other queens are canon in the mlp series, who are their voic actresses?

Pfoah, no idea. I hardly know any voice actresses and am pretty bad with imagining their voices to begin with. All I know is that Miasma should sound rather sultry, Ambrosia chipper, Myxine kinda tired and Calliphora spooky, kind of a sing-song voice.

Okay because I was wondering on how their voice sound.

Hey, Siansaar, I'm doing a sort of epic-fantasy fanfic series, and I was wondering if I could have your permission to include your Changeling hives in my series. I promise to give you full credit, and I'll only do so at your discretion.

I think Queen Caliphora and her daughter would look better as changelings then the reformed versions like they showed in the show. In that it would take away the mystery behind Queen Caliphora.

Yeah, I don't plan on reforming any of them.

I feel that the bulk of the fun of making a fan fiction about Queen Caliphora is that the main characters don't know if she is simply using them to feed or if she views them as friends or something between. Such as if Queen Caliphora fell into a tank of tie dye it would kill the mastery and suspense of the character.

Your work is very interesting. I'm definitely going to make an OC off of one of these. Or maybe I'll come up with my own intangible thought of a hive and send it to you.

I've already got one! Feel free to change as much of this as you want, just tell me if you like it and send me the link when you're done. They're called the Triatoma hive, and their color scheme is based off of the color brown. You can go crazy with the rest of their appearance, as long as it makes sense. They're incredibly aggressive to the point where they are more predatory than parasitic, and they will suck ponies dry of love- but not by proximity. They can do it by proximity like other Changelings, but they usually don't. Instead, they trick them into going somewhere hidden, and then they jab their straw-like, long horns into the ponies and literally suck out their love, vital fluids, and magic, which will almost certainly kill the pony if the Changeling is able to complete the task- however, it can take quite a while, depending on the target's size, and magical potency. They change the vital fluids into a stickier, more durable substitute for the fluid the other hives produce. The magic they absorb can then be used by them as it would be used by the target- for instance, they could absorb the magical ability to walk on clouds from a Pegasus, Unicorn magic from, well, a Unicorn, and Earth Pony magic. (which does canonically exist, look it up, Tyandaga did a video about it.) This would only last as long as the magic they have in them depletes, which depends on how much they absorbed. They also have naturally longer necks, longer, more curved horns that are pointed forwards rather than backwards and their torsos look more heavyset than the other Hives because they're actually consuming physical matter. They also have skinnier legs and their shells are more prominently colored. For a reference, look up the "triatoma" genus of insects. They're what I based the hive off of, obviously. You can name the queen whatever you want as long as it's fitting.

Try playing both at the same time. Perfectly describes the Nekropolis hive. I like this idea so much, I might even make a Nekropolis Hive OC. If you don't mind.

Awesome! Thanks. people like you and Tyandaga are really showing me that having a large fanbase doesn't mean you can't respond to everyone, so now I don't have to worry about forgetting to reply to people when I start my YouTube channel. Also, don't forget to check out my reply below this video, about my suggestion for the Triatoma hive. As it says, feel free to change ANYTHING about the hive. They're essentially based off of assassin bugs, so keep that in mind when (or if) you design them.

Do you think Queen Caliphora would be able to talk as herself on her own when she is not  impersonating someone?

I'm experimenting with a new idea that she would not talk but would make a clicking or whimpering or hissing sound based off of her mood.

OceanRailroader [2015-10-06 04:58:16 +0000 UTC]

Do you think she would have the capability of making friends if it had some type of  benefit to her?

Also have you seen the zombie Bub from Day of the Dead?  I'm starting to think that this might be the closet example of what a friendship with Queen Caliphora would be like.

Siansaar In reply to OceanRailroader [2015-10-06 16:55:07 +0000 UTC]

I haven't. And I generally think changelings are at best able to make acquaintances or associates. They are too mistrustful to make friends.

OceanRailroader In reply to Siansaar [2015-10-06 17:05:40 +0000 UTC]

Here a link showing Bub www.youtube.com/watch?v=So3wvW…

What gives me the idea about basing Queen Caliphora around Bub is Bub acts strange in that he doesn't try to eat the human character Doctor Logan in the movie and somewhat becomes a friend.  There is line in the Day of the Dead that gave me the idea for Queen Caliphora. The line is Bub is strange in that it's what he doesn't do that makes him strange he doesn't get all riled up thinking he is lunch.

In my fan fiction with her my main character Lotto does not trust her and is creep ed out with how she sometimes will randomly pop up in front of him like he is following him around or something. He actually has a fear that she might like him like him

Apple Bloom though out the story would not have any comprehension of how possibly dangerous Queen Caliphora or her alternate pony self Madam Cali could be in the Ponyville Cemetery.  Apple Bloom though is mainly lucky Queen Caliphora doesn't want to turn Apple Bloom into a husk.

Mr. Sooty though thinks Queen Caliphora can use her powers to help ponies and not simply impersonate drunken teenage ponies dead grandmothers in the cemetery. During the first week of Queen Caliphora trying this idea out it helps blow the lid off of a mass murder mystery.
