If this takes 90 minutes, and that's considered short, I wonder what kind of monstrosities they use at Pixar.

Pixar don´t use Maxwell. They use Pixars Renderman.
I don´t think any animation studio uses unbiased rendering. I´s way too slow.

And you've lost me again.
What I've managed to glean, and correct me if I'm wrong, is that Pixar uses a secret in-house renderer.
And that they use... biased rendering? Image tricks?
Wikipedia time.

That´s basicly, what I said. This "secret" inhouse renderer goes by the name Pixar renderman and can be purchased legally. There is nothing secret about it. And yes it´s not unbiased. So it´s biased.
Using tricks is quite normal for movie productions.
Those tricks are for example texture and animation baking, matte painting, HDR mapping and billboard rendering.

So is there a reason you prefer Maxwell over Renderman?

The reason is simple. I have Maxwell. I don´t have renderman.
When I want to use biased rendering, I use Cinema4D.
But really, I don´t "prefer" anything, actually. I just think about the question "biased or unbiased?" before every single picture. The decision depends on how much time I have, which effects I want/need, is it animated, etc.
If I don´t need exteme photorealism, Maxwell takes just too much time.
But if I want realistic subsurfacescattering or depth of field, C4D just fails to satisfy me.

AFAIK keyshot doesn't even have placeable lights, does it? I read it is all HDR based lighting.
Comparing maxwell to unbiased renderers is quite pointless already, and keyshot is even more. The different software philosophy makes it like comparing apples to bananas.

You can Place light in Keyshot. You need objects with emitter material.

Yes. The material Mode is named "flat"
