I've been keeping my eyes peeled for a photo of a black-and-white cat to draw on black paper, and this cute little kitten caught by eye.
I left most of the paper blank. I've been having fun with negative space lately.
The digital copy of this drawing took a lot more editing after scanning then normal. Normally I can make some small global balance adjustments after scanning, and it's all good. On this one, the scanner was interpreting the texture of the paper to be almost exactly the same color as the highlighting of the black fur, so I had to go in by hand and erase all the paper texture to create a true, black background. It also refused to color the b/w portions true, so I had to take two seperate scans and recombine the colored and b/w portions of the drawing.

For the white part of the fur, I just used a white pencil. On the rest of the fur, I think I used one shade of gray, and the ears are one shade of pink. It's been so long that I couldn't say how many I used for the eyes, but it was at least three colors.

The black paper is great! I was amazed at how well the Prismacolors take on the black paper. They really are completely opaque.

Yes, they are. They do saturate the paper, and the waxy texture prevents them from completely covering each other, but on a raw surface, they are opaque. That little feature has been allowing me to play around with different colored and textured paper, like this one and Portrait of Ari.

The only suggestion I can make is that the nose is too far down on the face for a cat, otherwisee, excellent work!

Thanks! Hmm... I think you're right. After going back and looking at both my drawing and the reference photo, I think I did elongate the nose just slightly. Good eye! I hadn't noticed.
