Yes, in fact I absolutely love John Bauer's artworks and they often inspire me for my paintings.
But in that illustration I was actually more inspired by Theodor Kittelsen c:

Yes, actually it the same thing that white gel pens, but in a bottle. Here is the brand I use : www.tvhland.com/vignette/materβ¦
It's rather practiful but sometimes it blends with watercolors' pigments and turns into blue...

The little shepherdess and the trolls have such a Kittelsen feel to them. And I love the colour the poppies have, we used to have similar coloured ones, they were rather huge.
