Today marks the 154th year since the American Civil War officially ended. People often consider the war's end to have come when General Lee surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox in April of 1865 but it wasn't until August that next year when President Andrew Johnson declared hostilities to be over once and for all.
