Description Sweden and Finland wearing the so-called "nationella dräkten" (national costume).

The costume was introduced in 1778 by king Gustav III, hoping to stop the nobility from spending too much on luxury fashion. Gustav III had become king in 1771, and the year after, he had peacefully enacted a coup, giving himself more power to decide stuff. This started "the Gustavian era". Gustav III, and enlightened despot, was actually pretty good at ruling the country by himself, but he did also have several enemies, and the dislike of him increased as he laid even more power into his own hands, but didn't solve the nation's problems well enough. Hence in 1792, the King was shot at a masquerade ball. His teenaged son Gustav IV took over, but he didn't really have what it takes to be an absolute monarch (being generally viewed as Sweden's worst king ever). In 1809, after he had managed to lose Finland to Russia, Gustav IV was deposed by another coup, and the king's power was once again reduced, ending the Gustavian era.

Anyway, back to the point: the national costume became mandatory at the court, and at various other official situations, like some kind of uniform. Certain colours (Black+red and light blue+white, I believe) were reserved for the nobility. I think there were more complicated rules for the colours and decorations depending on what your role in sociely was, but sadly I don't know the details. In this drawing I decided to simply go with the flag colours of the countries.

Genarally, the Swedish national costume was hated by pretty much everyone who was forced to wear it. However, I have also heard it was a bit more popular later, becoming something of a patriotic symbyl as an "urban folk costume" in the early 19th century. I have heard that the national costume continued to be used in certain official ceremonies way into the next century, such as university promotions, and that this became a pain in the ass for everyone involved since it became really difficult to find this outdated costume anywhere.

I believe Hima drew Sweden wearing this outfit somewhere as well, but I didn't know that when I started this drawing.

Sealand should get his ass outta there before Gustav III forces him into one of those outfits too.
Lucky for Sealand, he wasn't born yet at that time though.

I meant to comment on this when I saw it on tumblr, but alas I suck and I forgot. Anyway, I really like this piece because firstly, it looks great, and secondly, I had to do a good bit of reading about this national costume for my University paper. It's great when I can finally ramble about all these exciting things to someone, so apologies in advance, because I'm almost certain you know most, if not all of it, already. XD

You're spot on with the colours you mentioned in the comments (but I must say the flag colours do look very good, perhaps Gustav III should've used them instead 8D) and I do recall reading about differences in details in accordance to roles as you said. For the most part though, I remember it was the women's dress which had much more variation to it. Anyway, I think Gustav III's heart was in the right place, the nobility in many countries frequently controlled the current trends, so he was right to attempt to curtail it somewhat. He supposedly had a 'one people, one costume' belief, and hoped the costume would be a patriotic symbol, as it paid respect to Swedish Textiles as well. I read the costume itself was generally disliked by the nobility for the fact they felt it was unfashionable compared to the dress of their guests from elsewhere in Europe (one source I read cited it was such an embarrassment that when the King was no longer in sight, they'd change into alternate clothing) . Also I found an interesting fact(?) that in spite of the dress code, Gustav himself opted to continue ordering styles from France (the main styles he'd banned his people from wearing XD). Ironic but amusing to say the least. Feel free to correct me on anything, I'm just plucking information from a few sources I referred to for my own discussion. XD

Again I rambled, by no means am I saying you knew none of the above, because I already have a solid impression from tumblr and DA that you know your history. 8I I just really love to talk with someone who appreciates this kind of thing. Anyhow, the important fact is this is a lovely bit of art, and its nice to see more styles of dress as you've done throughout your comics!
