Description
Evangeline sat on the edge of the bowl shaped crater, tail wrapped neatly around her legs as she watched what was happening below. This wasn't her forte, being around so many people was a feat in itself, but then being in the midst of a battle with so many strangers? It had been a relief when she was told to stay higher on the rim of the battlefields high walled borders and wait.
It had been an accident she stumbled on the fighting group and their tank armies. These tanks were . . . Massive to say the least. The old technology towered over a ketucaris head but moved slow as a glacier in the winter. No one had been able to pierce the metal hides of the contraptions though, not until she showed up. A dasrah user was a handy tool against old akadri machines, she'd like to believe a bit more helpful than either of the other magics her kind knew, and they'd pulled her to aid them almost as soon as she'd come into sight. Someone among them must have a good sense of magics, she hadn't told them a thing. Truth be told, she wasn't all that experienced with dasrah yet either, and the worry that she'd mess up her chance to help gnawed at her stomach and sent it into fish flops.
“Don't you have other magic users around who might be able to help?” She'd inquired with a nervous tilt of her ears.
Not a single one. What kind of group went to war on mar machines of olden days without at least a few magic users? And then calling on a stranger to control explosions right over their heads? This wasn't some adventure story. She wasn't a protagonist!
Sounds to her back pulled her eyes off the fighting for a few moments, surely it wouldn't be harmful to look away at the pace the machines were backing into the cauldron trap, seeking whoever or whatever was up here with her.
“Watching the fighting?” a black faced kaden was emerging over the ridge, not bothering to keep her footsteps quiet against the dry and crackling ground. She wasn’t being sneaky, so there was less chance she was an enemy or threat to Evangeline.
“Helping actually,” the frizzle tilted her head slightly, watching the stranger come to the crater rim and lay, lounging where there was a good view of the ketucari fighters trying to back the tanks into the trap.
That seemed to surprise her. “Yeah? You know magic or something? I know there’s a lot of you out there but I didn’t take you for one. . . . better question though, how are you helping from all the way up here?”
“I know some,” Evangeline turned back to the battlefield, not letting herself be distracted further. This was an important job. “I can do this thing where I set off explosions down there from where we are. They want me to wait until the tanks are in the cauldron and then set them off; hopefully we break them and they stop working well. What are you doing up here though, are you helping too?” The blue kaden was genuinely curious for the reason the other was all the way out here if not to help, but the way she laid made it seem more likely she wasn’t actively aiding in the battle against the tanks.
“I just find fights and watch them sometimes for fun, no help from me. Not unless they pay.” The chuckling was a bit off putting, no humor in it, but Evangeline did her best not to let it sour her mood or take her attention off the battle. Who watched fighting for fun?
“That your cue?” The charcoal faced kaden flicked her ears at the lower caudron, the shouts of excited fighters carrying up to them both. She was right, the tanks were fully backed into the crater now, Hel’s den of heat and gasses, and the fighters were backing away quickly, leaving the tanks to her mercy.
It was time to shine. Evangeline braced her feet and stared down the cauldron, choosing where she’d focus her efforts. A cluster of tanks was there on the edge, a few closer to one another than the rest. A well done explosion there could upset several of them at once if she made it powerful enough. And on the other side a shot to the farthest most tank might make the whole group remaining move away from the two ends, all clustering in the center together. This might be doable in only a few good explosions.
Magic sparked out in an arc, shooting into the cauldron. The tank nearest turned, but far too slowly to see and avoid its fate. Fire blew outward, the force of the explosion that resulted from Evangeline’s actions denting the tanks inward and knocking them off balance. The nearest fell on its side, the legs that carried it flailing slowly in the air. Before any of them could recover another explosion set off, cracking another straight down the center and pushing more toward the center of the trap.
The black faced kaden was no longer leisurely flopped on the ground; her ears pointed in alarm at the scene below and eyes wide against the black fur. “You did all that? Well damn.”
The . . . approval? Yeah that was approval, Evangeline decided, gave a confidence boost to the magic user and she set off another series of explosions, watching the tanks panic and try escaping, only to be pinned in at every turn.
Cheers came from the fighters, the group swarming in on the last two or three broken tanks which weren’t totally decimated yet after the detonations cleared. It was hard to believe she could honestly say ‘this battle would have been lost without me’ but here she was, looking at the results. She’d taken out more than all the fighters had been able in mere minutes. “Yeah, its . . it's a powerful magic.” She agreed breathlessly with the strange kaden.
“You have my respect,” the kaden stood and began to slink away. The ‘show’ was already over, no reason to stick around. “If we run into one another again I’ll gladly give you aid if you need it. Any kaden who can handle herself that well is worth the effort.” She slipped down the ridge, leaving Evangeline to look out at her work again, regaining energy and preparing to go down to greet the fighters and collect the promised rewards.
