This is to address those who say "This is the Internet" as an excuse for their rudeness.

I'm sorry, but that's not how it works.

This may be the Internet, but it is still a public place (though you can access it from private places like your home). You are a guest here, and you still need to mind your manners, just like you would need to in a store, a restaurant, or at a friend's house. You do not need to agree with what someone else said or did, but the least you can do is to be polite about it.

As always, no rude, mean, or hateful comments, please.

So true. I just hate seeing people bashing in the Internet and excuse themselves.

A few days ago I watched a documentary on YouTube about transgender people, because I wanted to find out more about people who feel like they're in the wrong body. I wanted to understand them better. When I scrolled through the comments I saw so much hate. People were telling them to go kill themselves and I honestly wonder if those people had the balls to say those things face-to-face to another person!

When I was young, I often received really nasty and mean comments that made me feel bad and depressed. People hated and flamed me based on my favorite anime pairing. Those people told me they would rape me if they find me, injure me, break my bones or even kill me. It was really difficult to handle those comments, so I disabled comments as a result. I think especially young people (kids, teens, young adults) will take those comments more serious than they should and this is dangerous. Do those people even understand that they might actually kill someone with their words?

People who write crap like that are cowards who simply think they can say/write whatever they want in the Internet because they won't be any consequences. I really wish people would think more and consider that another person might actually hurt themselves. There is no problem in voicing your opinion or starting a discussion as long as you respect other people. There is no need to be rude. There is no need for subtle sarcasm or acting like you hold the truth or acting like other people are stupid for not thinking the same way. I have seen so many people in the Internet who act like assholes and think it's okay since it's 'only Internet'.

People have every right to voice their views, even if rude and some people naturally are more inclined to being rude due to their abrasive personality.
But the Internet certainly isn't an excuse for rudeness.
Being rude or 'offensive' (e.g. telling a holocaust joke or being brutally honest) is fine, but repeated harassment or bullying certainly isn't.

Of course, politeness is usually the best policy.

And of course you got the freedom of speech which they will use as an excuse. I'm all for freedom (expect for death threaths, death wishes gone too far and harassment) of speech;however you should not be above criticism.

A week or two ago I was going through some anti-CORE art. One of the first things I saw was the core logo with a swastika in the place of the star. Somebody said that even though that hated core shall that the swastika was really excessive and of course the creator put up the this is the internet excuse for it. This is the internet is a really poor excuse for your actions, especially comparing something bad to something much more worse.

Couldn't disagree more. The internet is a place where people can be the most honest with their thoughts and opinions, and politeness is almost always actively hiding your true behaviour and opinions for the sake of civility. While rudeness for the sake of being rude might be unnecessary, choosing to not give a damn about everyone's sensibilities to say what you want to say is a great use of a world wide public forum.

To say "you're a guest here" and comparing the internet to a restaurant completely misses what makes the internet a unique forum for social interaction.Β

Besides, have you seen the kinds of things people say when they can't be held accountable for their words? There is simply a level of offensive stupidity that cannot be met with anything but righteous indignation, regardless of how "rude" it is.

MadKingFroggy In reply to LordlyCaliber [2017-09-24 23:37:06 +0000 UTC]

Although I think it's often (but not always) better to be polite in many cases, I acknowledge that people can be rude if they'd like to.Β
Also, in a sense politeness is self restriction, holding back some thoughts so as not to offend. But in some cases it's better to be rude by telling the truth rather than polite.Β
