Cove’s cold Christmas

It was December and while everyone started wearing sweaters only a month prior to this one to combat the cold temperatures dropping; A young orange jellyfish shivers under several blankets as well as wearing two sweaters in the warmth of his best friend’s house while he watched the snow falling out the window, and his friend, a blue and gold tenrec, only a couple of years younger than himself, coming in from jumping around in the white freezing flurries.

“Come on Cove! It’s so much fun! You’ll like it!” Quentin, The little tenrec, encouraged him, but the water lingering from the melted snow from Quentin’s gloves coating the bare hand of his jellyfish friend, as Quentin attempted to pull him up, made any thoughts of humoring his friend, and going out in the snow, vanish.

He shakes his head. Wrapping his blanket around his friend. “You freeze, Bruddah. You go stay warm.” He said, leading him into the living room in front of the fire.

“Cove, I’m fine.” The five year old protested as the jellyfish pulled him into his lap and picked up an XPad. Hearing a lot about the upcoming holiday that follows the snow, Cove and Quentin pull up a Christmas movie and the two of them sat there watching the movie until Quentin fell asleep in his lap.

The eight year old jellyfish, not really interested in the ideas and beliefs about the holiday, and not used to the type of technology the land dwellers owned, he paused the movie and set the device aside.

Holding his friend as he watched the fire; a sight he had only seen about once a year when the Alexander’s would visit him and his family at Emerald coast. The memories of his parents attempting to dance on land caused a numbness to spread over him as he tried forgetting the memories when the voice of Quentin’s father, Sebastian, interrupted his thoughts.

“Did you get too cold?”

Cove sat there nodding lightly his eyes still fixed on the contained dancing flames in the fireplace.

Coming around the chair, Sebastian smiles upon seeing his son sleeping in his adopted son’s lap, but the look of concern spreading over his face as he knelt next to the chair and sees the solemn look on the young jellyfish’s face.

“I miss tem.” Cove said sadly.

Remembering, not only the child’s parents but the friendship he had with Ikaika and Anuhea, Sebastian could feel his pain as he scooped up both boys in his arms and brought them over to the couch.

Quentin stirring a little, but having no trouble falling asleep cuddling up warmly against his father.

And Sebastian’s other arm wrapped comfortingly around his best friend’s son. “I miss them, too. But I know they’d be proud of you.”

Looking up at the dark blue tenrec with purple highlights around his eyes very close to the color of his father’s tentacles, a smile pulled at the edges of Cove’s lips as he rests his head on Sebastian’s shoulder.

Sitting by the fire the both of them stared out the window at the beautiful scene of snow gently floating down from the sky and covering the ground with a bright white coat. It didn’t take long for Cove to fall asleep, too.

——————————

The next morning Quentin helped Cove into two sweaters, A light jacket and two winter coats, a massive hat to fit over the bell cap on his head as well as thick snow boots and pulled his best friend outside in the snow.

“See?! It’s not that bad.” Quentin said making a few tracks in the snow.

Once he had determined they were far enough away from the house. Quentin made a snowball and started rolling it around in the snow to make it bigger.

“You do one, too.”

Looking down at the white ground piled up around his boots sparkling in The sunlight.

As best he could with the many layers he wore, Cove bent over and did the same. Rolling his ball around in the snow until it was nearly the size of Quentin’s.

“Here let me help you with that.” Sebastian said coming up to the two boys.

He picked up the smaller of the two balls and placed it on top the other. The little tenrec running off to make the head while Cove smoothed out the surface with his glove.

Sebastian helping the jellyfish as he packed a little extra snow around the snowman’s waist to keep the ball from rolling off.

Not even a minute later Quentin came back with another large snowball. As Cordelia met them outside with a small bag of goodies for their new winter friend.

Picking up the last snowball Sebastian placed it on the top, and packed snow around it’s neck while Cordelia opened the bag and passed out the contents to the the children.

Sticking two wooden spoons in the side of the snowman for arms, Quentin, using a marker drew a smile on the snowman while Cove shoves the coal ‘buttons’ in his mid section where he was directed to put them.

Lifting the jellyfish, Sebastian helps him put the snowman’s eyes in place while Cordelia helps her son put the carrot nose on.

Stepping back, still holding Cove, Sebastian smiles “He looks good.”

“Wait!” Quentin cries taking off his scarf and putting it on the snowman, the orange jellyfish looking at him like he was crazy for taking it off in the cold weather. “There. Perfect!” The small blue tenrec smiles with pride.

“Diss guy get one name ‘Frosty’?” Cove asks remembering one of the Christmas movies from the XPad last night.

Cordelia smiles “You can name him whatever you want. You don’t have to call him Frosty.”

“Hmm... Icy.” Quentin said shrugging “icy man?”

“hau ʻāʻā” Cove said

The others looks at him curiously not knowing enough Hawaiian to understand what he said. Sebastian vocalizing his curiosity first “hm?”

“hau ʻāʻā. Frostbite.” Cove translated what he said

“Perfect!” Quentin cheered

Chuckling softly “Frostbite it is.” Sebastian announced.

“Come on.” Cordelia said swinging Quentin onto her hip “let’s go eat lunch and then you boys can go sledding.” She said as they made their way back in the house. Producing a round of cheering from Quentin and his father.

The orange jellyfish just smiles and nods, not really sure what it was, but that everything he saw about it seemed to be fun.

The young tenrec wiggles out of his mother’s arms. Catching his arm he struggled trying to escape to go play as she took off his coat and boots.

laughing lightly as Sebastian pulled the third layer of cloths off the young jellyfish and still felt a few more under it, but stopped there as he started shivering again , and coughing lightly.

Taking his hat off his hand ran over the top of Cove’s wet bell cap. Picking him up again he took him to the bathroom.

Setting him on the closed toilet he turned on the shower on hot and closed the curtain.

Steam slowly filling the bathroom as they sat together, eventually removing the other three layers of clothing down to his Hawaiian shirt.

It getting warmer and more humid by the second, Sebastian took off his sweater, too. Cove smiling at the purple fur on the dark blue Tenrec’s chest. Reminding him of his father.

The both of them sitting in there and warming up and rehydrating.

——————————

A hour or so later the family got out of their car bundled up again.

Sebastian pulling out a sled from the back of the car. Setting it on the snow and closing the door. He grabbed the read rope and pulled around and the two boys crawled on it.

Once they were settled down Sebastian hikes through the snow pulling the sled up the hill. Cordelia driving the car away.

Finding it had grown more foggy in the past few hours, but thankfully it was not as thick so they did not have to cancel the trip and turn back.

Once at the top he looked down the hill. Thankful he could see a couple of miles down the soft slopes.

He crawled behind Cove and held the rope to steer.

The orange jellyfish holding tightly onto Quentin who squirmed with excitement.

In unison Sebastian and Cove leans forward tilting the sled down the hill.

Their hearts racing in anticipation as it caught the hill and slid forward. The three of them cheering as it glided over the hill and began sliding.

🎶Dashing through the snow! In a one-horse open slay!🎶

Quentin starting to sing they gradually built up speed gliding across the snow as the world blurs around them.

🎶Over the hills we go! Laughing all the way! Ha Ha Ha!🎶

Sebastian joined his son in the singing while the snow glistening behind them as little flurries were kicked up by the sled. The two of them singing as they continued.

Cove smiling at the happy tune and the beautiful sight of the trees and the snow.

For the first time in the few months since his parents death he felt hopeful and laughed and joining in singing in the chorus. Temporarily forgetting his sorrows and sadness and felt the pure happiness of the season with his new family.

The one pulling the sled is Sebastian , nicknamed Ash.
His son is the smaller blue tenrec on the sled named Quentin , And the jellyfish on the sled with the multicolored tentacles is Ka Hao or his English name is Cove .

I wrote a small story to go with the picture. It’s in the description.
