The short version was my family living in a house that the town took by eminent domain and so cut off most services to (except for electricity) but didn't pay us for the value of either the home or land so we stubbornly kept living there.Ā IĀ couldn't take it anymore after a few years and moved out (hot showers are a luxury I never want to go without ever again).Ā My dad still lives there.Ā He'll live there 'till he dies as a big F U to the town.

Wow. Sorry to hear that.
Seems like they always pull crap like that, in my city they widened a road and paid the demolished homeowners half price of the land, since half of each lot was going to be paved over, therefore it didn't exist.
