Hey guys,

I'm going to be a little silent for a couple of days. Two of my doves were killed this morning. There's been some construction in the neighborhood behind us so the rats have been fleeing to ours. They used our alley and got into our yard and have been attacking our doves. I had five in total. The mother, Archimedes, was killed a few months prior and eaten. Dad didn't tell me because he knew I would be upset but reinforced the cage. Her daughter, Thavma, was killed about two weeks ago. She was mutilated. Yesterday, I noticed Drifter, who's in a cage alone, looking bloody and scared. So we moved her into another cage with Delphi and his son Socrates. This morning Drifter and Delphi were killed, heads eaten and my Dad killed the two rats responsible. Socrates was the only survivor and we learned they got through an opening where they water was. My Dad reinforced the cage.. We can't keep him inside, there's not enough room and as much as I want to free him rather than him getting eaten, he was born and raised in that cage. He wouldn't survive if he was freed. I just hope he'll be okay. Sorry for being a downer but I'm really attached to my pets.Β

Now, as much as I hate suggesting this, have you considered using some sort of poison or deterrent against the rats? Powdered Oleander is very potent, and your bird shouldn't be too affected by it as long as you keep the stuff from contaminating the bird's feed.

I can understand being attached to pets all too well, and I think we all can understand that feeling, really. I also don't like to see any form of life ending. Yet, these rats are becoming a nuisance, and it can easily escalate. While the doves are presented as an easy target, giving them an even easier target would be irresistible to them, and if one rat dies of the poison, well... The other rats are likely to cannibalize it, and die themselves, or at least get sick. From there, they'll be afraid of the area...

Sorry, morbid and all, I know...

I never heard of powdered Oleander. Where can I get some? Well the rat poison is a great idea. We used it under the house when they were hiding under there but we don't want to use it out in the open because of our dogs and cat. Pepper is still a puppy (even though he's HUGE) and he eats everything because he can. We don't want him getting poisoned or god-forbid decide to play with a dead poisonous rat. My cat who's eleven and won't be able to fight off a poisoning if he ingests the poison. We used glue traps and they're SUPER successful but the problem with that is the sparrows get caught in them too. We've captured a lot but not until the construction stops, they'll keep coming back but now we're reinforcing the cages to keep the birds safe and now we're adding more traps in areas they're not expecting. We hadn't seen any in a few days.Β

Well, that's good. Oleander is a very toxic plant that is used quite often in landscape arrangements here in Florida. Ricin, the main component in rat poison, is the toxin that the Oleander plant produces. I make my own with the Oleander around my home, but I'm certain that you can probably find it online.

Yeah, with a puppy going around, might want to nix the idea of Oleander... It smells unusual, and animals will want to eat it... If the glue traps are working well, keep using them then. It's good that you haven't found any more rats since then.

AH! I actually got an idea. The place that they've been using to get in is along the wall from the alley. I was thinking we can mix it in with seeds, put it in a feeder where only the rats can get it (and not the innocent sparrows) and let nature take it's course. The wall is too high for any one to get to it easily. And the main thing they've been looking for is food.Β

Ah, that would work! And other animals will be able to avoid it all!

Sadly wild rats by Nature are scavengers. They'll eat anything! Especially when there's no viable food source for them to eat. With us we have an avocado tree but since the avocados aren't in season so they can't eat those. We made the dove food and parakeet food inaccessible to them so they can't eat that. So they took the chance and got the doves. That's why my mom is terrified of them! She actually witnessed a baby's feet being eaten by a rat. She was about 8 or 10 and the woman that lived behind her grandmother started screaming and she and her grandmother went to investigate and there was a rat in the baby's crib eating its toes. My great great grandmother took a broom knocked it out and chased around before beating it to death. Ever since then my mom has been deathly afraid of rats.

Thanks

It came as a shock to be honest. Especially since we were trying to save Drifter and ended up sending her to her death. Socrates is just fine. He's a little trooper. He still silently judging me so I know he's fine ^^ but this means we have to keep a better watch on him. And make sure that there is no way they can get into the cage. We need to give him a friend so he won't be alone in there. From the moment he was born there were at least three other birds and there with him now he's by himself and all he does is coo.

I just need a few days to take my mind off of it a bit. I am so sorry.

Well mainly because we're doing exactly what the exterminators will do, which is leave traps around in things and we can't really or spray poison around our yard. Mainly because I have two dogs and a cat and I don't want them to get poisoned over this. Especially my puppy. He's still young and everything is seen as food to him. It's literally a catch-22. Socrates is safe now.

Our pit bull was about 12 and the other was 14. We put our pit down because she was a rescue we adopted she was miserable most days. The other was one we found on the streets. He threw a clot from his leg to his lungs and he passes away before we could even get him to the vet.

Time to line the outside of the cage with those Bengal rat traps.(They don't just snap the rodents neck, it bites their heads off!)

Check the pest control aisle of Walmart, or some hardware stores. Might try glue traps too, doesn't kill, but they ain't getting off them either.

Picture has a mean looking black cat.

Gotta be careful though they'll take your fingers. >_<
