Dust Dependency Examination File:

Denia's dust dependence comes from her family's predisposition to have a certain gene in their body. The dust reacts to the gene in a way not seen often. On the outside, Denia consumes dust at the normal rate of others, albeit with a few more supplements than most, and seems to behave identical to those without such dependency. In fact, she is unable to use this gene without a high risk of death until she's consumed and her body has metabolized a certain amount of dust. Once that threshold has been reached, she still seems unchanged, albeit her appearance may seem to indicate her body is in it's prime state of health. (This threshold has been attempted to be determined by the medical staff, however no solid number or volume was able to be determined. Denia however, seems to be able to know this threshold without the use of medical equipment.) This state lasts for a few months, if her gene is not used, until her body metabolizes to much dust. At this amount, she begins behaving much like a human with the flu. Her nose runs, a fever comes, she might feel aches in her muscles. A peculiar observation of her mucus is that during this time it feels like coarse mud, and upon examining it under a microscope grains of dust can be found in it, as her body attempts to remove this excess dust. However, her body seems to be in a state of a paradox, she still requires her normal amount of dust supplement, but her body responds to it like a disease and attempts to remove it. Denia has stated that this condition gets progressively worse until the smallest supplement is like a toxin, and will kill her. This condition, she also reported, can be cured immediately if she uses her ability granted to her by the mutated gene.

Keeping this background in mind, her ability, and that she is able to know when it is safe to use, is quite extraordinary. The medical staff tasked with reporting her dependency for the sake of dust rationing observed this first hand from an observation room adjacent to the room Denia resided in. They reported the event in a series of stages, listed below.

Stage 1

No change in subjects appearance or surroundings. Subject appears to be concentrating but otherwise the same.

Stage 2

Subject's eyes have changed from their normal state to a pupiless milky yellow. Subject's visible skin seems to crawl and twist as if an outside force is moving it. Clothing appears taught and about to tear. Height has increased by about a foot

Stage 3

Visible mutations appear. Face begins to elongate into a snout with teeth jutting out from the lips. Rapid height and weight gain as mutated skin covers subject's body, clothes seem to dissolve into the skin. Tailbone lengthens rapidly and what appear to be extra appendages start to sprout halfway down the ribcage. Audible noises of bones growing shifting and breaking to reform as well as the sound of what is assumed to be organs shifting. Subject appears to be breathing heavily, from pain or expansion of lungs is undetermined.

Stage 4

Mutations continue to grow. Feet have melded together to form hooves while the hands have changed to something like a hawk, talons included. Appendages that started growing below the primaries have finished, and appear to be somewhat opposable. Shorter claws, with fleshy pads on the end. Tail has grown to be about as long as the body with a fluke at the end, apparently the subject's mutated form is somewhat aquatic. Horns have erupted on the head and the ears have lengthened and tapered to a point on the end. Hair has melded to the body to form a bristling mane over the back of the subject's neck and primary shoulders. Height has slowed, but still continuing to grow. The breathing has shifted from human to beastial. Posture has changes from upright to quadruped as she becomes top heavy.

Stage 5

Changes have shifted from extreme to subtle. Size and weight has stabilized. Two rows of fin like protrusions erupt from the top of the head down the subject's back Before fusing into a single line at the end of the tail. Fin like protrusions grow from subject's cheek bones. Internal noises cease and breathing becomes regular.

Stage 6

Subject has fully changed, all traces of human have vanished aside from the retained understanding of the human language. New set of limbs are just long enough for the tips of the fingers to touch the ground comfortably.

The staff at this point entered the same room as Denia for further examination. Two sets of gills were discovered on the underside of the neck, determining that she could breath both on land and underwater in this form. The first set of feet, what used to be hands, had skin between the toes that could be expanded to form webs for ease of movement in water. After a few tests, it was also determined that when needed, she could orient herself into an upright position. However managing anything faster than a walk was difficult and she displayed a preference to move with all feet on the ground. Her skin proved to be abnormally thick or tough in some places as a natural form of armor. While the skin on her underside was slightly less so, it was much thicker than normal. Speed and strength were not tested, but from Denia's military records it seems like her claws have the capability to rip through a tanks metal armor with some semblance of ease.

When transformed back Denia reported painful cramps over the majority of her body. She said this is normal and can vary in intensity based on how active she is while in her other form. Curiously her clothes were unharmed, also claimed as normal, unless she is provoked into transforming without intention or concentration, which yields to clothes being torn and rendered unwearable. She says this lasts for a couple days, and she has requested to have those days off for her to recuperate.

Attached to this record is an image of Denia transformed. One of the staff volunteered to stand next to her for visual reference. He is 6'

Personality:

Awkward|Friendly|Protective|Nervous|Inventive|Obstinate

Awkward: "Oh gosh sorry, um, don't mind me!"

In new or unfamiliar situations, specifically social ones, Denia has a hard time handling protocol. You'd think a former soldier would of had stuff like that beaten into their skull, but she often finds herself with flippers for feet. There's a reason she avoids formal parties (not to mention avoiding a certain group leader who almost killed two of her co-workers)

Friendly: "Hey! You doing alright?"

Easy to get along with, Denia doesn't mind making a new friend. Just respect her and be kind, and she'll consider you a friend in an instant.

Protective: "You'll have to go through me first."

Does she like you? Does she respect you? If anything along those lines can be answered with yes, you can bet your life she'll willingly throw herself in front of practically anything to protect you. Doesn't matter what, Denia will go full mama bear on whoever is messing with you.

Nervous: "Oh-uh... right."

Hand in hand with being awkward, being in awkward situations easily makes her nerve waver. Prone to stuttering, attempting to remove herself from said situations, it's an all around amusing time to the observer. Otherwise, she'll keep her cool, but put her in an awkward situation, and she'll become instantly a wall hugger.

Inventive: "Trust me I'm an engineer."

Denia is very inventive in her methods of repair. If she dosen't have the correct tools (with her pockets it would be surprising if she didn't), then she'll throw some weird way of doing it. Very much a believer that duct tape can infact fix everything, she'll attempt to fix a broken pipe with a piece of string and a tea kettle if those are the only things she has.

And somehow she ends up succeeding in fixing the issue with the strangest of materials, most of the time.

Obstinate: "No,no I can fix this. Maybe I just had to move this piece and not the other."

Being inventive means failing until you find something that works. And this fits Denia to a T. She'll often spend hours bent over some broken device trying to find SOME way to fix whatever the heck is wrong with it. Which often ends up with the space around her desk having piles of crumpled pieces of paper and scrap material littered in piles around it from failed attempts.

Equipment:

T.E.C.H Armor

It stands for "Technicians External Conservation Harness" or some silly name like that. From her time as a field mechanic in the dust wars, she fished it out of family storage after she was hired by Orion. While it doesn't cover every part of her body, it protects all vital areas. The helmet has a respirator attached that filters air from the outside or if she needs to, take air from oxygen tanks after attaching two hoses to the sides of the face mask. Goggles protect her eyes with shatter and bullet resistant lenses and the helmet itself is equipped with a radio type devise for incoming messages. (The microphone so she can send messages back is inside the respirator) The helmet can be worn all together or in pieces. The body part of the armor has places for her tools to be slotted in for field use and if necessary a pack can be strapped on. There is room on the back for both oxygen tanks and her gun to be attached safely.

A feature of her armor she keeps to herself is the fact that there are internal clasps designed only to open when significant pressure is placed on them from the inside of the suit. This is so the armor can come off without damage if she changes (because she can't make the armor just meld into her transformation like she can her clothes)

Silenced Laser Blaster/Assault Rifle

A gun she jerry rigged together from parts of other weapons, it essentially functions as an assault rifle. Except it shoots lasers. The gun doesn't have a battery pack installed, the power to fire the laser rounds come from the clips that get put in. These clips are rechargeable so she doesn't have to go buy ammo. She added a silencer feature so the gun doesn't make a loud pew pew noise when fired, only soft zing noises.

Maintenance scanner

A scanner that can be used to scan a piece of equipment or structure for internal damage. Just large enough to fit comfortably in one hand. Scans show up in real time on a holographic HUD above the device.

Shock gauntlets

Usually attached to her armor but sometimes worn without. The gauntlets use the dust in the air to create electric charges to deliver a punch that also can electrocute (or fry skin/clothes) If less than adequate amounts of dust are in the air, the gauntlets have small charge generators inside.

History Dossier:

Denia was born between low and high end Ironstead to two happy parents. Her dad worked as a mechanic, her mom was an electronic technician working at the same place as her father. She lived a relatively normal childhood, if you didn't take into account the long line of dust dependants in the family, with one strange, yet varied ability.

The first time she'd shifted was when she got into a fist fight with two other kids. She can't remember much, only that she had a sudden moment of intense pain before blacking out. Her memory returns after waking up in her house with the most painful cramps she'd ever experienced in her life. All the shifters in the family looked different in their alternate form. Some were bulky, some slim, some could swim and some could fly. The only constant was they never looked human afterwards and were always at least a foot taller than they were human. Some of her family managed to skip out on the gene, and could live their life as normal people, but most got it. Her younger brother was one of these lucky ones.

After the first shift, Denia's life changed. Before, she hadn't needed to watch her dust intake. After, she had to know when she would have to shift or her body would start trying to remove dust from her system and needed to shift, or when her body had to little dust and shifting would kill her. Controlling emotions such as rage were also necessary, otherwise she could end up changing uncontrollably, something that can be dangerous if she had to little dust. These lessons were kept private and taught by both her parents and other members of her family.

She had just finished her education when the Atoll state showed up, plunging New Ironstead into war. Feeling like this would give her needed experience (and an outlet for her inner monster, after all, who would question a few vehicles from the Atoll state being destroyed by a wild tarnic every so often?) Denia enlisted as a mechanic and field technician, a job that would put her on the frontlines only occasionally, and keep her safe in a base otherwise. She kept her ability under wraps from even her higher ups, only mentioning that her family genetics caused her to need moderate amounts of dust rations. She was assigned to a squad and nobody suspected anything.

However one day, her squad found themselves in a recently abandoned trench to repair the radio equipment so the militia could come in and use it again. Everything was as usual, the squad was close to the front lines but far enough away to expect no problems while they worked. That is, until the scout spotted a small group of tanks rolling closer and closer. This wouldn't have been a problem if Denia hadn't fixed the radio at the same moment, the trench looked abandoned enough for them to just roll by without issue. However Denia had managed to fix the beacon when the tanks were discovered, and enough time elapsed from activation to when Denia rushed to secure the connection that there was no way the enemy recon didn't pick it up and realize someone was inside the trench they were passing. Unable to flee the trench without being mowed down but unable to stay without a high risk of being shot when enemy troops searched the place, the squad set up for a last stand, fortifying the radio station as their base. They didn't notice in the calamity that their mechanic managed to slip away...

...until they heard the sounds of screaming soldiers, rending metal, and Tarnic roars.

The small unit scrambled from their hiding space to peak out from the lip of the trench and see what was happening. Through the gloom they saw the silhouette of a giant Tarnic tearing apart the enemy tanks with a fury and crushing the enemy forces between it's teeth. Frightened the squad bunkered down in the transmission room, now more afraid of the fact that a GIANT FUCKING MONSTER was around than the Tanks. Tanks could be outsmarted, Tarnic... well, there was a reason Ironstead had walls around it. The squad leader did a headcount and it was then they realized they were one short. They waited until the sounds died down and the scout reported the Tarnic seemed to had vanished, then all went out and searched for their missing member. They checked the areas surrounding the base first, before daring to sneak over to the sight of the ravaged tanks, in case the creature was still around.

To their utter shock, they found the enemy machines ripped open like sardine cans, each soldier ripped apart or with broken necks and thrown about, none had been eaten. They found Denia hiding behind a large boulder, shaking and with clothes so tattered they were surprised they even stayed on at all. (In truth denia had been completely nude when she changed back, and had haphazardly thrown her torn clothes and damaged armor back on so it looked more like she had just taken a bad fall or something) When they asked what happened, Denia made up a story about how she was planning on putting some emp charges down to stop the tanks when the big tarnic appeared. She tried to see what had happened after it left and had taken a bad fall around the broken tanks and her gear had gotten the worst of it. The fact that she wasn't bleeding at all caused the squad leader to call her out, to which she said she'd explain that later. They didn't know it at the time but Denia didn't want to explain it there because she was worried about someone listening in. Taking the answer with a grain of salt the leader called in their pickup unit and helped the mechanic back to base while the rest of the crew salvaged what they could find from the damaged tanks for analysis back at base.

Several days later, Denia finally told them the truth. The crew was shocked, but in the end accepted it, dust abilities weren't uncommon, they just were surprised she hadn't told them at the start. At her request, they kept her ability secret, not because she was afraid of others knowing, but she didn't want to be transferred to some other squad because her ability might be of more use on the front lines. Afterwards the squad leader had a patch made for their unit with a tarnic on it, publicly stating it was because of the time they were saved by a well timed Tarnic attack, but they all knew privately the real reason.

After the war Denia returned home and started working as a mechanic at a repair shop nearby where her father worked. The nine years between the end of the war and now were uneventful, and she was wanting a change of pace. Then a job application from Orion found it's way into her hands, and she decided hell, not much can go wrong with staying in the base as a mechanic right?

Time will tell.

Trivia:
-- Her cargo pants seemingly have endless pockets, and stuffed with all sorts of random bits and bobs. Some examples of these are a roll of duct tape, a can of WD-40, snacks, sanitary pads, first aid kit, random bits of scrap paper and plenty of pencils.
-- The one thing you won't find in her pockets are condoms and other types of contraceptives. Denia is asexual and unable to have children, so she has no reason to carry those around.
-- That said the sanitary pads are for her other menstruation having coworkers, not herself.
-- Infertile for her also means no periods
-- She keeps everything she owns in those pockets of hers, with the exception of her pillow, mattress, blanket, formal clothes(her military uniform)and tools that are to big to be kept anywhere but her tool box
-- If she runs out of pockets on her cargo pants she just stitches more on.
--She has the ability to partially shift in order to gain an increase in her natural abilities. For example, she can shift her eyes to gain night vision, shift her hands to get the webbing or talons for swimming or fighting, or shift her vocal cords to alter her voice. This will lower her internal amount of dust, and prevent her from fully shifting, but at a slower rate so the side effects are really superficial aside from momentary pain upon reversion.

RP method: Lit style or talking it out (ie; situation discussion). Script is hard to stay IC in. Notes, Comments, Skype, Chat prefered.

Shipping?: She's rather difficult to get attraction from, but go ahead! No children though, she's infertile.
