Description Yes, I DO still do hand-drawn art, latest gallery submissions notwithstanding.

Otto REALLY is not a morning octopus.

Yay for curly actuators. And for diner coffeepots to use as models. Done in a local diner while waiting for breakfast after a slumber party. It was quite amusing- just about everyone was doodling or doing watercolors or something.

I don't own Otto. Wish I did.

i didn't say that because i didnt know if it'd be frowned upon in this site. yeah, showers and random inspirations as you fight to go to sleep are my most common lol

This looks like me in the morning, but with actuators.

You ought to put this in the Ock Masters.

That's so cute.

I wonder if the actuators sleep? I was working on a comic about what they do while Otto is asleep, but never finished it.

SilverGryphon8 In reply to Lieju [2010-09-26 16:40:57 +0000 UTC]

Well, with my Otto, they either go into a low-power mode where they don't do much of anything, just sort of hang out and keep an eye on things, or they go off and watch late night TV and surf the internet.

Lieju In reply to SilverGryphon8 [2010-09-26 17:14:30 +0000 UTC]

It's clearer in the comics-version, where they don't posses a mind of their own.

I kinda tend to think they really don't and that they are rather a part of Doc's mind, letting a part of his subconscious take charge. I don't think it would work very well if your limbs had minds of their own, would make it hard to coordinate things.

I also wonder how it affects them if the Doc is asleep. Do they see into his dreams?

SilverGryphon8 In reply to Lieju [2010-09-26 17:20:38 +0000 UTC]

It is a lot clearer in the comics.

I believe that is the official explanation- that the voices Otto was hearing were only reflections of his subconscious. But I find that had to write- it's loads easier for me to work with what amounts to four separate intelligences that Otto directs. And more fun ^_^ All versions are equally valid.

Hmm... I don't know if they see into his dreams. My version would probably be able to, but more or less dismiss it as Otto's brain running random screensavers- vaguely amusing but nothing important.

In the movie, I think the trauma of Rosie's death made Ock want to them to take over, so he wouldn't have to deal with things, but when he comes to his senses I think he'd form a more stable relationship with the actuator-part of his mind.
It also brings up the question of where Otto ends and the actuators begin, if they can affect him and he can order them. I think of his mind as being partly in the actuators and partly in the organic brain.

SilverGryphon8 In reply to Lieju [2010-09-26 21:40:25 +0000 UTC]

*nods in agreement* I ran with a similar idea- Otto letting the actuators have control (or at the very least a hell of a lot of influence) so he wouldn't have to deal with the reality of Rosie's death, or the deaths of the surgeons, or his general failure with the reactor. They were built to create and control the reactor, so that's what they urged him to do.

Hmm... I guess for pure Movie!Otto, that's probably about right. Like I said before I treat mine as being separate but linked entities, so it's a bit different.

Lieju In reply to SilverGryphon8 [2010-09-27 11:28:29 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, my Otto is too kinda a mix between comic and movie-Otto, with mostly movie, though. I liked it how he can't take the actuators off, and while I like the comic-Otto too, he was just so awesome in the movie.

I think it's like he is mostly the movie-Otto, but with the history of the comics. Works well as long as you don't concentrate on the backstory too much.

Cool blend! Hard to juggle, I'd imagine, but it gives you a lot of flexibility.

I like how SSM treated him- the harness itself was fused to him, but the tentacles themselves could be removed.

Lieju In reply to SilverGryphon8 [2010-09-27 16:03:59 +0000 UTC]

SSM = Spectacular SPider-man, right?

That series also had the thing with his tentacles needing the power-source, which was more realistic.

SilverGryphon8 In reply to Lieju [2010-09-27 16:19:37 +0000 UTC]

*nods* That's right. And I thought the power core thing was pretty nifty- though why they only made one when it clearly worked so well... and why did it just /happen/ to fit Ock's rig? Surely he wasn't planning to steal it and use it to power his harness after having it fused to him when he originally made the tentacles, right?

Right?

Or was he? This IS Doc Ock we're talking about...

/paranoid

Lieju In reply to SilverGryphon8 [2010-09-27 16:28:20 +0000 UTC]

Well, it would make sense they had some kind of standard for the "batteries".
It's been a while since I saw the episodes, so I can't remember the details, but maybe it was experimental, and they concluded that making them cost too much or needed Cryptonite or something.

I don't think the Pre-Ock Otto in that series would have thought about something like that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SilverGryphon8 In reply to Lieju [2010-09-27 22:44:20 +0000 UTC]

Well, Otto did design both the tentacles and the power pack- maybe there was some subconscious 'hey, let's use the specs from the last project and not reinvent the wheel' thing going on. I remember it was an experimental power pack, I don't think they mentioned why it never went to production.

And no, looking at Otto before the accident, you wouldn't think he would plan something like that... but he is the Master Planner... maybe he was the Master Planner before he was Doctor Octopus..

*winces as Otto glares at her* Okay, okay, I'll stop with the paranoid conspiracy theories...

Thanks

Hmm.. I had some months on them. Depending on the angle, they are so hard. I use the 3d cube method with them when I can. Then the interlacing parts are so horribly hard.

0o Dang engineers!
