This is the project I've been working on the last two weeks, whenever I could get the computer... that eventually become an obssession. I even put aside more important stuff, just couldn't help but wanting to see it ready. But it 's finished at last, for best or worse, and after this'll be really busy with other works of more responsibility.
Well, "Vegeta is" has became my most popular work here... it must be reaching the 80 faves, if I´m not wrong. And it ocurred me that Bulma is much more abused in fanfiction than her husband. Luckily, now we can post more than one submission to "Character is", [link] but even if not, I would have done that.
I initially had planned it in the classic "Character is" role, with the last colun "She's not in love with 17, Radditz, etc..." but then, I realized the number of abusing Bulma suffers from other characters is much bigger than her alternative pairings. The Yamcha pannel is dedicated to Debbiechan and other of my pro-Yamcha friends from DBZ Fanfic Salon... Im not a Yamcha fan, but always found absurd those fics that villanize him, poor boy. Yet the fics where Bulma is abused by Vegeta or her father are even worse. I honesly don't believe she´s a masochist to be in love with a man that beaten and terrified her (though her early years with Vegeta were't certainly a sea of roses). And her father... the poor old man is a sweet!
Alternate fanfiction has its advantages to change the story and put our characters doing what they don't in canon, allright... yet, I always found funny that in practically every AU Sci-fi stuff Bulma is seen as the most gorgeous woman in the universe. She´s pursued by Freeza, Zarbon, Vegeta, Dodoria, the Ginyu Troop, Nappa, Radditz, to not mention that almost every alien she meets is a Kameroshi in potential, no matter if they have tentacles or claws. A friend of mine commented she must have very strong feromones.
It's impressive the number of fics where Zarbon or Radditz (or both) are utterly obssessed with Bulma's beauty. Well, again fanfiction is for us to make happen things we'd like to see... but couldn't help thinking it´s funny to see these two drooling over a woman they ignored completely in canon!
About the pannel 11... perhaps some might feel disturbed for this, but I did my best to lighten it up. I had cases of cancer in my own family, so I have good reasons for hating to see my dear character getting destroyed by terminal diseases.
The pannel four of the first column is a little vulgar, perhaps... but there was a space missing, and couldn't think of anything better. Like most of BV lovers, I like Bulma and Vegeta´s hentais (I´m not a nun!), but, honestly, I frequently think people makes them as... two perverteds hungry for sex, at the lack of a better word. (remember the "not perverted pannel in Vegeta is?) And it always irritated me the fics that claim that Bulma "had many men between Yamcha and Vegeta". By the fact that she was a "little" flirty it doesn´t mean she is really promiscuous!!

Yamcha cheated on Bulma, apparently Akira Toryiama confirmed that (I received many comments telling me that once I posted this comic). But abuser? No way.

You know, we only hear this from Trunks' point of view. Maybe it was a story Bulma told her son? Because if you analyze Yamcha's character correctly, he's not a cheater in any way. He's naturally timid around women.
My head-canon is Bulma was paranoid and broke up with Yamcha because she THOUGHT he was cheating on her, when in fact, he wasn't.

This comic pretty much sums up why I have trouble finding in-character fanfics. My least favorite cliches listed here are probably sex slave/concubine Bulma who attracts everyone in the galaxy and the biting one. Sometimes the biting in fics turns Bulma into a Saiyan. (Just because Saiyans transform into fanged beasts under a full moon doesn't mean they're vampires or werewolves; DBZ isn't a paranormal romance novel.) If fanfic writers wanna write about a blue Saiyan, maybe they should write more about Bra kicking ass instead being a shopaholic. Creepy Dr.Briefs only makes sense if it's DBZ Abridged, Bulma's too rich to get Capsule Corp bought out by another company, and I guess the cancer stories come from Bulma's smoking habit but I still hate them; it's really sad and uncreative.

I haven't read BV fanfics for a long time, but the 'abused by Yamcha' cliché is definitely the one I've seen the most. In every fanfic related to either the 3 years or an AU, Yamcha was always portrayed as the bad guy who hit Bulma, cheated on her and even tried to sexually abuse her. I wasn't his fan but it really pissed me off.
He never treated Bulma that way in the anime/manga. Why can't the annoying fangirls get it?!

Pfff, they STILL write abusive Yamcha fics? How stupid, to not say stubborn. I guess that some fans actually don't watch much DBZ, for a start.
When I was tiring of BV fanfics, some writers started to write fics where Yamcha was more In Character, which showed his point of view. Or, even when the focus was Vegeta and Bulma, that Yamcha was
shown more like the true Yamcha. Honestly, I think that his relationship wore off with Bulma for many other reasons than cheating (she wasn't faithful, either), because they actually were unable to connect.
I can recommend you some fics where Yamcha is better, if you like.

I roll my eyes at anything that says Yamcha or Vegeta abuse Bulma for fanfic's sake. Yes, they're far from perfect but let's be real, Master Roshi was the one abusing Bulma by making her flash him when she was a teenager! Not Vegeta and Yamcha. The evil Dr. Briefs thing is the worst in my opinion. If he was abusive, I don't think Bulma or her sister Tights would've been comfortable staying at the Briefs mansion or inviting guests over there.

Honestly, I feel that some ficwriters created their fanfictions based upon others' fanfics or try to make it, uh, "realistic", without bothering themselves to watch more episodes of the anime.

It's funny how idiots think Bulma's a nymphomaniac... She is vulgar, fickle and flirtatious (or I should say was, since motherhood really helps her mature a lot), but definitely NOT a nymph. Hell, in the manga, during the second dragon ball hunting adventure, when she thinks she's about to die, she cries out "I still haven't ever been kissed yet." (DB, Volume 7, Chapter 79, page 7). Now really, does that sound like a nymph? Especially considering that at that point, she's been dating Yamcha for nearly a year (meaning they hadn't even kissed in all that time). If she wanted to get laid by every handsome guy out there, it'd be an extremely simple task for one such as her.
I would even go so far as to say, she was well into her 20s by the time she lost her virginity. She dated Yamcha and afterwards, moved on to Vegeta. Having two guys all your life is hardly what I call being a nymph. But, Bulma haters are too stupid to realize as such...

Not to mention sexist. Maybe Bulma was a little hypocritical for flirting to other guys as she demanded loyalty from her boyfriend, but I always found funny the fact that everyone sees with condescendence when a guy flirts to other girls despite having a girlfriend or wife... and worse, expects that a woman be "patient" and "understands" if her man looks to other beautiful women. But if SHE does the same to pretty guys, she a slut?!! Hey, wait a minute!!
In Dragonball, when Bulma decided to take Goku (little) to the amusement park, I was pretty angry with the fact that everybody - Yamcha, Pual and Oolong, specifically - found her "selfish" and "spoiled" because she was angry at Yamcha due the girls running after him. Okay, that was not Yamcha's fault if those girls made a fanclub for him, but damn it, did they really expect that Bulma accepted this slightly? That she should "understand" and be happy that he was surrounded by ogling girls? I don't see this as selfishness, but as self-respect! (worse, the "selfish" girl had generously taken Pual, Oolong and Yamcha to her home, so they were criticized someone who had been generous to them. And afterwards, they asked to go to the park with Bulma as if they hadn't bashed her minutes ago... what a nerve!)
I don't deny that I found Bulma irritating many times (especially in Namekusei Saga... it was perfectly understandable that Krillin and Gohan didn't want to be around her. I'm trying to make her a little "nicer" in Untamed). But with all her flaws, she's also one of my favorite DBZ characters because she is so different from the other heroines. It always fascinated me the way she dealt with machines and plunged into an adventure despite the risks, and also her free-spirited posture. To be honest, I guess that she having no scruples to flirt with the boys she found pretty was interesting for me, too, because such attitude I've seen only in male characters. (heroines are usually sooo pure, modest and have eyes only for the hero)

I know, eh? And I really hate how some Yamcha fans make bs fics where Bulma cheats on him and gets impregnated with Vegeta, causing their relationship to end (some ignorant fools actually believe that's what transpired). That's such a load of crap, because one way or another, we know that Bulma only shared intimacy with Vegeta AFTER breaking up with Yamcha (and according to Toriyama, the anime and the manga, it was cause Yamcha cheated on her, not the other way around).
Yes, I agree that Bulma was a flirt, but she never physically cheated on Yamcha, whereas the inverse did occur. Others, like yourself say that their relationship had just run its course and so they broke it off and even though that's not that canonical version, its fair enough, but to say that Bulma cheated on Yamcha is just purely spiteful and denigrating and isn't that much better than fics where Bulma is portrayed as a delicate fragile and traumatised little angel that gets manhandled by Yamcha on a daily basis, until Vegeta saves her and tells her how much he loves her as she cries into his arms cough cough cough spit spit spit... xD
Under the circumstances, I don't blame Yamcha entirely, because it is evident from the Trunks saga that Bulma had a fascination towards Vegeta's enigmatic ways and Yamcha probably took note of this and decided to seek comfort elsewhere. He probably should've broken up with Bulma first though. At least, that's my brief take on it, which I would say is fair, in-character and in line with canon.
I actually found Bulma hilarious in the Namek saga LOL, especially how Bulma and Krillin keep abandoning her in the middle of nowhere and she gets so pissed off and starts meandering about random shit (love seeing her mad and how she acts so capriciously HAHAHA)... I also liked the whole crab incident, cause its an example of Bulma using her ingenuity to out-do enemies way out of her league. Bulma's definitely my favourite female in DBZ and I would say in my top 5 list. She's just too much, you've gotta love her!!!

Actually, the thing with Saiyans and their hair is that it always grows back to the exact same length. Vegeta mentions this after his training with Future Trunks; A Saiyan's hair remains the same from the day they're born, which is why neither Vegeta nor Goku have had any change to their hair (GT Vegeta was not done by Toriyama and is non-canon). So even if Bulma were a Saiyan (though I agree she shouldn't be. She's a scientist, not a fighter.), her hair would just grow right back if she cut it.

Yep, but when I did this there was a big dub/translation problem. Back then, it was misinterpreted that Sayan's hair wouldn't grow back if it was cut.
Maybe I'll change the baloon someday, maybe not (lost the originals). I did that because there are some fanfics where Bulma actually wishes to become a Saiyan (at the point of asking Shen-long) so she could keep up with Vegeta (youth, strenght, or to be suitable to marry a Saiyan prince). And I don't believe she would want that. She frequently whines about Vegeta and Goku's flaws saying: "Oh you Saiyans are all alike", etc.

Well, I was inspired by some fanfics were Bulma had to deal with businessmen' sexual harassment... usually, they tried to blackmail her, kind of "either you go to bad/marry with me or I'll ruin your business". But these guys are usually shallow and poorly written, as I pointed.

Actually I think that where Christian Grey came from if the whole thing about Fifty Shades of Grey originally being Twilight fanfic is true. It is weird that people write characters like that and then create uninteresting downgraded cardboard stands.
I could go on all day of how I see classic characters like Link, Samus (these two may not have much personalities but given what you see of them they do have a base for certain personalities and certainly not the one that horny fans have in mind), Sherlock and Tony Stark get turned into mindless... I don't have the right words to describe it but I am pretty sure it is the same treatment Vegeta gets when fanfic get really, really bad.

AU stuff has to be taken with a grain of salt, but it usually helps if the characters aren't just characters in name alone and keep their initial personalities. I've had to stop reading some just because they're so god awful and OOC, and full of the "tropes" you've listed above. The neck biting thing really annoys me in particular and I'm not sure why, but probably because it's the most abused one on your list. Also, so called "songfics" really wind me up. Breaking up the action of the story with some crappy song doth not a story make.

And yes, I know exactly how you feel about the AUs. I once started reading a Western AU BV some fans were entusiasted about, and couldn´t go from the first chapters. Bulma was the orphaned daughter of a priest, and a timid, modest girl who never had danced in her life and had her dresses sternly buttoned to the neck. And Vegeta was a lawyer, and was all gentle and sympatethic towards the poor orphan. I stopped and thought: "WHAT THE HECK??!!! The only thing these two have of Bulma and Vegeta are the names."
Guess that one of the reasons I started writing Untamed was because I wanted something different and with characters In Character.
I recommend to you the fanfic Vengeance, from Catgirl (you can find it on Mediaminer.org). It´s the "Earth destroyed" trope, but instead of the same old cliches, Bulma survives with her parents and most of her friends in a ship - and she´s not turned into a sexual slave. I must warn that it´s very long and it was tons of dialogues - but the characters are not OOC. Actually, Bulma´s ship lost control because Kameroshi and Oolong wanted to turn off Gravity and see the woman´s boobs floating up.

so looking back it just makes the comic all the more special, I have noted the clichés myself in fanfics, too many bad ideas around.
