Chapter 2

Alistair sat up with a jolt, breaking free of his nightmare. The blankets clung to his sweat drenched skin. The nightmare he had had for weeks now returned once again to trouble his sleep. As before he could see the hideous face of the archdemon as it "spoke" to its forces deep underground. Duncan had said these nightmares were the worst for those who were unlucky enough to join during the Blight. Rubbing his face he disentangled himself from his blankets. Pausing only to put on a shirt he crawled out of his tent. He glanced up at the sky which was fillled with shinning stars and a brilliant full moon. Standing there staring at the stars; the last traces of fear that lingered from his nightmare melted away. A soft whine brought his attention back to camp. Tabris' mabari Nadrin, from his place by the dying fire, lifted his head from his paws and wagged his stump of a tail. Smiling, Alistair grabbed two logs and threw them on the fire.

"Much better eh boy?"

The mabari flopped on his side letting his belly catch the warmth of the rekindled fire; using Alistair's foot for a headrest.

"Hey! My foot is not a pillow!" Alistair laughed as he lifted his foot out from under the dog's head.

His comrades were all sleeping soundly; exhausted from the day's events. He could see the glow of Morrigan's fire a good distance away from where he stood. Good, he thought, the farther away from me the better.
The two dwarves they had met in Lothering had parked their wagon nearby.
What were their names again? he wondered, Thats right, Bodhan and Sandal.
The other newcomer lay sleeping in her bedroll across from him. Her name was Lelianna, a sister from Lothering's chantry. She claimed that the Maker had told her to aid them. Personally Alistair thought she was crazy but as Tabris had pointed out it was foolish to turn away help offered. Tabris... Alistair glanced over at his fellow warden's tent. He wondered if her dreams were troubling her as his were. She had listened to his sorrows about failing Duncan at Ostagar with a patient ear even though she must have been tired of his moping about. She had even offered to go with him when he had said that he had wanted to build a memorial to Duncan in Highever. He didn't know if she was just humoring him or if she really cared.

As he was about to turn away and go back to his tent he thought he saw something moving through the shadows near her tent. Pretending he hadn't seen it he moved as if he was heading back to his tent. It paused for a moment then it started moving again and it looked as if it was planning on entering Tabris' tent. With a cry to wake the camp he charged at the prowler. Unfortunately for Alistair, the prowler had a knife; with which they gave him a nasty cut to his torso. Alistair's cry of pain rang out through the silent camp. If his shought hadn't woken them, his cry of pain would. cluching his side he knew the wound was serious.

Tabris burst from her tent. She sprang at her would-be assassin, tackling him to the ground. The two of them wrestled over the knife and it was Tabris who won and sat pinning down the would-be assassin. In the light from the fire Alistair could see tht the prowler was an elf and that he didn't seem too perturbed with Tabris sitting on top of him; in fact he seemed almost amused.

"Lelianna see if Bodhan has some rope we can use to tie him up," she said.

"There's no need for that I'm perfectly fine with you right where you are; unless you want to tie me up," the elf said.

There was the sound of a fist connecting with someone's skull.

"Ow! Well arn't you the aggressive one."

Tabris glared at the elf. Turning to her mabari she said:

"Nadrin, if he moves, eat him. Hurry up with that rope Lelianna!"

Dizy from the amount of blood that was pouring from his side, Alistair fell to his knees with a groan. He saw Tabris glance from himto the knife then back. Her brown eyes grew wide as she cried: "alistair you're bleeding! Don't move, I'll be right there!"

She got off the elf, there was a warning snarl from Nadrin, and darted into her tent. She came back out a nmoment later with a roll of bandages in one hand and a jar of healing salve in the other.

He tried to push her hands away saying, "I'm fine."

His forced smile made her glare at him.

"Don't give me that! This is serious Alistair, you may not think so but it is. the pain in your voice and the fact that that you cant even stand anymore tells me it is. So stop squirming and let me look!"

Alistair let her examine his wound wincing as she started applying the salve.

"That hurts you know," he whined.

As she was wrapping the bandages around him she said,"Thank you. If you hadn'y been there he would have killed me."

Alistair looked down and when he saw the gratitude in her eyes, he felt his face become hot.

Clearing his throat he said,"It was nothing."

She smiled at him, the first real smile he had seen on her face since Ostagar and felt his face get even hotter.

hmm i always go redcliff first cause it leads right into the mage tower gets more out of the way so you dont have to back track. well thats what i think lol
