Description This is NOT what I would recomend to get the best lines. The best way is to patiently use a vector tool and keep undoing until you get it perfect.

This way, though, is fast, easy, and it looks almost as good as long as you dont resize it much. I highly recomend trying it and experimenting with its elements to figure out what best works with you and your printer.

Oh, and yes, the pen I used to ink this picture was the last in my drawer and its life was almost up. I thought it made for a great example for this project. Now I have to hut down all my expensive technical pens that people stole off (or out of) my desk.

The pic is the line-art for a giftie for :3 which should be done in a day or two.

I've always wondered how people scan in lineart and make it look all smooth like that!
Awesome tutorial, and awesome lineart as well! Even though you had to work with a bad pen, this still looks excellent! xD <3

Sadly, I have Elements 1.0... like, the WORST Photoshop version.
It doesn't have the curves option or the select>color range, which really sucks. It's missing so many of the lovely options that the later versions have. I could probably work around that somehow, but... it's not the same.

I am seriously considering buying a mac though, since they're so much better for graphics than Windows. Did yours come with CS2?

Macs are so much better for graphics?
How so?
Just wondering, because I have used both and didn't see much difference in either as long as both have the same version of photoshop installed.

no I bought it.

I just remembered something! when I had an old crappy version of photo plus or something like that, I scanned in black and white. But it took forever to clean up the lines which usually looked pixelated. You might be able to use that. They may smooth over after resizing as a color pic.

Thanks

I favor 7.0 but this is cs2 which freezes less, but when it does freeze is much much less likely to unfreeze.

Cool. Does this work for Elements 3.0 too? I'm working on getting a better version of photoshop but until then, thats what i've got to work with.

Tori-Ohki In reply to mttw-artistic1 [2006-11-01 08:21:16 +0000 UTC]

It may or may not work for elements. I don't think it will. It doesn't seem that 'curves' is there. : /
I used to be stuck with elements too, I feel your pain. I have have photoshop 7 now and it RAWKS. It took some getting used to, because it has more stuff than 'elements'. (I couldn't find the smudge tool for the longest time! Turns out you have to right click.)But it is soooooo much better.
When I had elements, I scanned in a line art, ajusted the contrast to make the lines darker and then I duplicated the layer that the lines were on and put the new layer on "overlay". then gaussian blur the new layer and adjust the level of blurring until it looks right. This will help lines look smoother. Well anyway good luck.

I'm not sure. I've never used it. I would check to see if it has the curves option.
