Description Edit 10-13-06: Scan uploaded, much better image quality. You can see the colors and details much better.

Finished commission for the wonderful Myr, who was generous enough to help us out in our time of need. This is his character Myr, who is an auroran dragon, hence the many bright colors. This was a learning experience with lighting, and the photograph totally chewed up the subtle shading and color shifts, the original is much sharper. Since the painting is still wet, I am not able to scan it at this time, so this image will be replaced with a scan once I can move it without fear of smearing.

Size: 11x14" illustration board

Oh, I found this on DA now too. >^.=.^< It's just too good not to comment on it here also. I think this came out great and I can't wait to see it person. *is highly excited* The pic has a lot of depth and character as well as detail. It takes true talent to mold all of those together like you have. Great work and I can't wait to see more!

Beautiful! I think that the colors look quite excellent here, so I can only imagine how much better they must be minus being chewed on by the scanner. Myr is looking great! He definitely is a colorful beasty, and the pose and setting is quite regal.

Thank you.
It's more the subtle gradiations and the colors were altered a bit by the digital photograph. Plus it's rather grainy, and that takes away from the detail that is actually there. I'm hoping to get a nice scan and replace this in the future.

wow!! incredible colors. I love it. I also like that the head is not like "traditional" dragon heads. More...equine in appearance. Very nice! *goes to check out yer gallery*

It took me a long time to be able to work like this, and I'm still learning. Takes mucho practice.

Yay! First comment! (does a dance) I love the pose and how you did the waves! Your artwork is always beautiful.

Did you use oil paints for the painting?

silvermoonnw In reply to ageroth [2006-10-08 15:06:10 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I used Windsor & Newton water mixable oils. I like those because they don't reek with fumes and it's good because I have two little kids who love to get into things.

I myself use acrylics on my paintings, but I don't think I'm ready to be doing any prints for quite a long time. My paintings are about 24"x18", so they don't fit on my scanner bed, otherwise I would have tried to post a couple.

You have two kids now? I only knew about the first when I saw that pencil drawing you did from a few years ago.

Yep, two now, both boys. My youngest one will be one year old two days after Christmas. This was actually a smallish painting for me, I like to work on 16x20" illustration board, but I will probably do more small paintings like this. I tried acrylics for a while, but I didn't like the way they blended and moved, although some people can do amazing things with them.

Yeah, acrylics can be difficult, but they're better than watercolor paints I think.
