Description Day 25's offering...

Back to something a bit more pastoral, and dare I say it... cute, for today.

I rather like this general idea and might end up revisiting it sometime soon.

Damn, for someone who dislikes backgrounds, you went all out in this piece! The composition is really great too! It's a really nice playful piece, set amid a happy yet pretty detailed forest!

The characters are fun, not only because they have neat ears and swishy tails, but because you've got them in a really happy playful scene that feels so relaxing yet it makes me grin in amusement.

They've certainly got a lot of fur, which is interesting since it departs from the typical approach that furry artists go for when portraying even more humanoid-looking furries. Thus, I would say that this piece is not a "furry" piece, and is instead more of a "fantasy" piece that deviates heavily from the typical archetype of faeries in the forest, or unicorns and such.

The playfulness definitely reminds me of cats, but you've made them human enough that the viewer is going to see them as people first, and animal-creatures second, which allows them to really empathize with the scene.

And then there is the scenery XD Wow. You not only do awesome rocks and rockscapes, you do a really awesome forestscape too! Of course, this was clear when you did the elf boy in the forest a few years ago, but you did this in a day. Damn. With such quick strokes you manage to not only make the trees look realistic, you manage to make the texture realistic too! These trees feel very gritty and rough, just exactly as they should be.

The way you handled the background too really turned out! I love you you shaded and hatched the background with a mostly consistent stroke, yet you also added some contour in to help emphasize the edges. This makes it feel like a forest and not a meadow, but it also lends a sense of "middle of nowhere in a forest" feel to this, giving the scene privacy and density. On the other hand, you managed to keep it from feeling "spooky" not only by adding the flowers, but by also leaving the furthest background open and empty, rather than filling it in with dark value.

This is the sort of illustration I would expect from someone who lives in the middle of a forest, who can go out and just sketch what they see. Your imagine is powerful enough that I would bet you didn't have to go out and hunt down the local parks just to sketch trees. Amazing..

*heh*

Yeah, I do seem to have done a lot of relatively complete background this time in the sketch-a-day project... which is good, as last year's usually required me sitting there thinking of background ideas, which usually took much longer than figuring out what I was doing with the figures.

I do like this one. It's playful and light and can be read as childhood friends, or lovers. I do hope I can translate this one to a finished piece without losing the playful feel.

You're still growing as an artist, which means your works are still very much alive and your creative talent is thriving. The fact that you're now sketching out full backgrounds is a big accomplishment in how much you've grown as an artist. And although you'll always find room for improvement on pieces, its very important to recognize how great you've become, and how far you've advanced over time!
