Those things around their hands are called chargeshields, they're meant to look a bit like the typical "magic circle" you see in anime like Fairy Tail and such, and they appear whenever the person they appear by or around or in front of is trying to focus their chee-karakh (weird electricity/energy stuff in between the different dimensions) shot fire into not being a 360 sphere of colorful death

yes, i know any other self-respecting urban fantasy author would've just called it "magic" and been done with it, but sO hELP mE I WILL eXPLAIN eVERY "magic-y" sUPERPOWER iN mY bOOKS AS A sUPERPOWER NOT MAGIC BECAUSE I'M A NERDY CHRISTIAN WHO REFUSES TO PUT ACTUAL MAGIC IN HER BOOKS, SO THERE

yes i consider "whereabouts of the heart" to be their theme, the powerful "weeping rage" feel of it fits a little TOO well with these poor kids
