Description This is Bella, a gorgeous lioness holding court over the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, in the capital city of Malawi. Bella’s life did not start out well; she was raised and lived in substandard conditions in a zoo in Romania that lacked resources to care for her sufficiently. From malnutrition and lack of medical care, she lost an eye and has deformed hind legs. Fortunately, Bella was rescued in 2008 and came to the Wildlife Centre, where she will live out her life. Here, Bella is treated as the queen of the centre and its most beloved resident. Though blind and lame, she carries herself with royal dignity.

The Lilongwe Wildlife Centre is a sanctuary and rehabilitation facility for injured, rescued, or orphaned animals. Many of their residents are released back into the wild, but of course Bella will stay there for education and community outreach. She’s a great ambassador of her species!

Yes, my encounter with Bella was something special! I got to pet her through the fence--way cool!!! And she was so happy for the attention! She did purr and purr, and even followed us as we left, rubbing up against the fence--kind of like a kitty rubbing up against her owner. I recorded her purring--think of a house cat's purr but about 4 octaves lower. It was an amazing encounter with this regal creature!

I would jump at the chance to pet her! And her purr was beyond words to describe!
