Description
During the events of Blackest Night, Spider-Man and Masane were chosen to be part of the Blue Lanterns and Star Sapphires respectively. During those hours of war against the Black Lanterns, both heroes encountered an unpleasant surprise. An Al Simmons as a Black Lantern.

However, something the couple didn't know was that something had been going on with Spawn's ring. It was continually connecting and disconnecting from the power source of the Black Lanterns and Nekron, with each disconnection taking longer than the last.

Spawn was breaking free from Nekron's control even though he possessed a Black Lantern ring. What the couple didn't know as they fought the still-controlled Spawn was to hold on until Al managed to break Nekron's hold on him. Once free, Al would be an extremely powerful ally against Nekron and his army of Black Lanterns.

With a green glow like necroplasm, Al freed himself from Nekron's control, becoming the first and only Black Lantern on the side of light.
