April 21: Tiradentes! So, here in Brazil we have a national holiday in homage to Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, the Tiradentes. He was a leading member of the Inconfidência Mineira, a revolutionary movement whose aim was full independence from the Portuguese colonial power and to create a Brazilian republic. Sadly, through, the plan was discovered and Tiradentes was arrested, tried and publicy hanged — he was the only one with a death sentence. His body was quartered into several pieces and those were exhibited in the citys between Vila Rica and Rio de Janeiro. His head was publicy displayed in Vila Rica to terrorize the populace.
