Description Here's my inevitable response to that awful costume redesign that everyone was talking about recently.

Personally i don't like the Diana Prince secret identity as a full-time thing. I figure the character is open and proud of who she is and where she is from, and doesn't feel the need to hide or disguise herself or try to blend in with western culture. Also i don't see her as someone who buys into the whole fashion thing. I think that probably she has her own clothes that she brought with her, and she is comfortable with wearing some combination of those in most situations.

So for her basic casual day-to-day outfit i went with one of those Greek/Roman toga/dress thingies. It's simple and elegant and classic and fits in with her culture and heritage. It also wouldn't be too out of place walking down a modern street... i mean for instance i found pictures of a bunch of celebrities wearing very similar dresses while googling for references.

Same thinking with the Roman sandals.

I stuck a bunch of decorative bits on the dress to make it a bit more interesting, such as Greek/Roman patterning on the edges, a bunch of stars, and a version of the character's classic eagle logo based on a Ben Caldwell design.

Oh and no tiara... tiara's are more of a formal thing right? I figure when dressed casually she would slip off the tiara and clip it next to her lasso at her side.

Great thing about the casual outfit is that you can throw an overcoat and a hat and glasses on over it and look like most other women out-and-about if necessary. Handy for sleuthing.

With the "regular" outfit i wanted to avoid the massive breastplate thing. I have seen and done a lot of Wonder Woman fan art in my time, so trust me when i say nobody can make that thing work. Adam Hughes only gets away with it by not really ever drawing the chestplate properly. It looks fine flat on paper, but it doesn't work in 3D with boobies in the way.

I also wanted to address the criticism that, in the real world, with her familiar costume, her boobs would be popping out every five minutes or so... which i'm sure would win her a bunch more fans, but would be a bugger to get past the censors.

I decided i wanted to bring in more of a Scythian/Sarmatian look for this version of the costume, as techically the Amazons were not Greeks really. I went with a lamellar corset/breastplate thingy made from leather scales. Often these have decorative panels at the top, which allowed me to have a space for the logo, and to raise the logo up off the breasts and give the whole cleavage danger zone a little more coverage.

I tried a lot of different versions of the logo, but in the end went with something really simple that could be a "WW" or a stylised eagle or a whole bunch of other things depending.

I like that she can just slip this on over her everyday clothing/toga-thingy, like a cop putting on a bulletproof vest, and there you have her costume for superheroing.

With the tiara i wanted to make it less massive and awkward and shrink it down to something more like they actually might have worn back in the day.

And finally for more dangerous shit i figured she could use a more traditional breastplate, with that nice big Ben Caldwell eagle logo on there. If you have an entire breastplate sculpted to fit her torso, and the eagle is engraved into it, then that'll work fine. It's just when you try to do the "classic" Wonder Woman breastplate, that has to fit around her breasts and also be attached to a fabric bustier, that you run into issues.

Uh... so yeah that's about all i can say.

Oh except that's Sarah Shahi in the costume, but more on that when i blog about casting.

Hmm. A bit TOO on the realist side for my taste, but that seems to be what you set out to do. It's a very nice alternative to her standard uniform.

Me gusta. Is it less shiny than her normal outfit? Yes. Does it make SO much more sense for actual superhero work while better reflecting her heritage? Oh yeah.

I wish the costume design folks would take hints from you. I love this a lot.

Much better than the craptasic feacal festival they plan on spewing to tv this fall. It makes me think of the design Alex Ross did for Kingdom Come. I love Ms Shahi's acting but shs too petite to play the amazon princess.

I was never a fan of Wonder Woman but I have to say the clothing costume design you've come up with would add a little credibility as far as I'm concerned and might make me read an issue or even go see the movie -- if either one adopted this look. Also, I loved her in "Life".

Man, everybody's all angry about the current redesign but they should know it'll never last: [link] .

But yeah, I actually really like your ideas. They look far more appropriate for her than the current thing they've got going!

Well i don't like to insult other artists, but i'm not a fan of that design. A lot of people make the costume far too busy when redesigning it, and i feel JMC's makes that mistake.

Also sure he/she has made the breastplate just about fit on his picture... but like i said that is just a flat picture. I've done a bunch of pictures myself using a similar breastplate. In the "real" world or a movie tho it wouldn't work... not flexible enough... so for instance the first time she tried to bring her arms together in front of her the entire breastplate would be pushed forward awkwardly. It's also too heavy to attach to a fabric top, especially a fabric top with no shoulder straps y'know?

Just my opinion tho.

a fine example of practicallity and function over form. I applaud the look and would actually read her book if she dressed in this manner and the stories revolved around classic greek/persian/roman mythos. I think so much more could be done with this wonderful character.

Thanks!

In an ideal world Mike Mignola would be writing Wonder Woman, with Daniel Acuna on art. Or something. And it would be more awesome than the most awesome thing ever.

Thanks mate!

I think this is such an obvious direction for a redesign, so i'm not sure why every time DC deceides to redesign the character she looks like an extra from a 1980s music video or something.
