Description

I can’t believe this is probably the last thing I’m going to have drawn in 2014. :V

Well, since my Miis in Tomodachi Life have been really gettin’ busy lately and having all sorts of strange offspring, it got me thinking about MXYL and how much I hated it. Not just the Penders part of it, either. Nevermind slumber party drama, I’m not interested in reading about Sonic and Sally lite, not!Bunnie and not!Antoine, the baffling spawn of Tails and Mina. If I have to read about the characters’ kids (which, future stories are already a big nono for me), I want them to be interesting in their own right, not copy/pastes of their parents. I think out of everything, that bothered me the most.

So I just futzed around, wanted to have pieces of both parents in the design, but not BE the parents. These could really use some streamlining, but for barfing up some ideas I don’t think they’re half bad.

So- of course I have personalities and stories for them. I always have a story.

Leftmost- The eldest daughter. Okay, so maybe it's just because I didn't like Sonia and Manic at all in MXYL, or maybe it's because I got so sick of the "oooh legacy of my forefathers, i must be like my ancestors" baloney that Penders spewed all over the place, but I reallly didn't like the idea of Sonic having a son. At least, not a son who looked like him and acted like him and was supposed to follow in his footsteps. NAH. Instead, he has two girls first, and none of his children have his super speed. NONE.

The first kid he has is the blue chipmunk. The direct heir to the crown, Sally takes her under her wing, and from a very young age she is groomed into becoming the future queen. Not stuff like how to be prim and proper, but how to lead a team, understanding the legal system, yadda yadda. It is Sally's thought (and fear) that should a similar crisis happen to what the Freedom Fighters experienced as children, it is up to this daughter to lead the new generation to victory. She's not trying to be an overbearing traditionalist like her father, and actually worries a little bit that she's behaving that way.  NICOLE becomes her mentor and sometimes assists her through an updated handheld body.

However, because of this attention, this daughter gets a very big head, an ego the size of the moon. She's going to be the Queen someday. There has never been any question about it, by her or anyone else. She is smarter than her siblings, she knows some karate moves, and when she's in power, she can order them around as she pleases. Well, try as her parents might to humble her a little, she retains this jerky attitude for most of her teenage years.

I imagine Sally wanting to name her Alicia or Julayla, or both, after her mother and mentor. But Sonic is NOT a fan of naming his children after real life people (see how that worked out for him), and talks her out of it.

Designwise, I wanted to play with Jules/Werehog colors with a Sally body/face structure. Originally didn't intend to give her that white bangs section, but I liked the look of it so kept it. I'm not so good at drawing Sally, I'm not sure she's really visible in the design here.

Middle- The middle child. A tiny, spunky ball of energy who's ready to go on an adventure and get into some fistfights. She's the most like Sonic in personality- still no super speed, but has taken after him in learning to parkour up and over just about everything. She's very active and is constantly learning new fighting techniques. So her sister's going to be queen and she isn't? So what? She's seen the training her sister's been going through and it looks dull as heck. By the age of 6, she had already decided she was going to be the world's next greatest hero. Sonic gets a kick out of it, Sally isn't so thrilled.

She's incredibly aggressive, moreso than her father. She gets into fights with her sister a lot, and bullies her little brother a little bit. Her temper gets her into the most trouble and she'll need to learn to keep it under control if she wants to be a better hero. But otherwise she's very bubbly and has an endearing personality. She gets along with a lot of people despite being kind of a jerk. (From my Chuck perspective ((I can't help it, it's what I do)), I think she'd be his secret favorite.)

Designwise, just a hedgehog with Sally's hair made out of quills. She looks like Tiara Boobowski, lol. :V Her outfit could really stand to be more unique, but I like the warm colors.

Rightmost- The youngest child, and only son. When it was announced they were having a boy, there were big expectations for him. As he grew up... not so much. It was clear early on that he didn't have his father's agility, nor his mother's aptitude. He kind of tends to be forgotten, and no one expects much of anything from him now. His oldest sister's going to be the monarch, the other one is going to be the hero- seems to him like there's nothing left for him to do. He feels a little detached from his immediate family and tends to seek comfort from more distant relatives, like his grandfather and uncle. For most of his life, he's just stumbling around, without a clue about what he's going to do with his future.

However, buried inside him, he's actually a perfect combination of his parents. Despite feelings of loneliness sometimes, he's got a heart of gold and a strong moral compass. He's incorruptible, and doesn't let anyone try to tell him what's right and what's wrong. In a strange turn of events later on in life, he reveals himself to be a tremendous leader when his oldest sister is called upon during a time of real crisis and chokes horribly. He steps up to guide people to safety and strategize a plan. This finally gets her to shut up about herself and reevaluate whether she even wants to be Queen.

In my head, Chuck dies sometime close to when he's born, causing Sonic to rethink his stance on naming his kids after people. Sally's fine with it, but remembers the grief Sonic gave her about Alicia/Julayla, and agrees to it under the condition she can also contribute her father's name. So I've been calling this kid Chucksamilian since I started drawing him. If Sonic Battle and "Emerl" is anything to go by, Sonic's terrible with naming people. Meanwhile, Chuck is rolling over in his grave. (That is a horrible, horrible name, and he's so so sorry for having anything to do with it.)

Didn't plan to even have a son in the group at first, but that's what my Sonic and Sally Miis had in TL, so I rolled with it. Their baby ended up being super chubby with these uber cheeks, and I liked the idea that Sonic and Sally have a kid that's heavy set. I'm not so wild about his color scheme being so similar to Elias and Sally, though- I originally tried it with more vibrant colors, even the pink and black Sally colors from the early comics. They didn't quite look right. But this doesn't either... Might make him more Rotorish in the next pass.

The poor child inherits his grandfather's, uncle's, and great-uncle's fuzzy fuzzy brows, as most men in Sally and Sonic's lineage do. That's how you know he's a natural born leader. :V

And the parents? Sally would be the main ruler. I can't see Sonic wanting to have anything to do with that business. He wouldn't want to be King at all. I don't think he'd be totally useless though, I mean, he'd go out and visit other territories. Basically wear his ambassador socks around the world and help maintain the peace. Besides that, I could see him being more of a stay-at-home dad, in that he doesn't actually stay at home, but is constantly with his kids and taking them on field trips to wherever he feels like. The kind of parent that shows up to school sometimes and lies about a dentist appointment to take their kids to Disney Land. Sally's the one out doing important business things, and she sees her kids less often.

When his kids were first born, he was really hoping for a son, because he had no idea how he was going to relate to a daughter. Sally was hoping for daughters, because she didn't want any mini-Sonics to deal with. But it kind of turned out that he had an easier time relating to all of his kids than Sally did, and they ended up being mini-Sonics anyway. He's closest to the middle one, but he loves all of his kids. He's finding the oldest daughter to be a bit of a pill lately though, hopes she grows out of that phase quick. Sally's closest to the oldest, but tries hard to remind herself to give attention to the other two. The last thing she wants is for her kids to resent each other.

And then obvs there's lots of cute babysitting adventures with other characters. But we'll get into that at another date.

Based on Archie Sonic characters

Oh my god I love the story for the last one, despite not having the looks but a big heart and being morally good? That's a good story right there! The other girls are pretty cool too, but I love him the most :3 these are great designs and well thought out stories! Good job!

OMG, I love these kids! I'm not even a Sonally fan, but I love these guys! I was pretty disappointed at the character designs of Manik and Sonia, and I honestly wished they had more-developed personalities. Archie, it's not hard to give teenagers, or even 5-year olds personalities! These are the kids that I wished that Archie would use!

I'm really digging both Selphie's old design, and her new design from the lineup. (That's her name, right?) Yeah, with all that attention put on her, no wonder she's got an inflated ego. I actually think she has the potential to be a good villain. No one would ever see it coming.  LOL, just kidding. I do wonder, though: In Chux's description, it says that she begins to re-evaluate her future as Queen. So what would happen if she gave up the throne? Would she run away, or would she just be an ambassador like her father? And would the throne go to Chux, since Peanut doesn't want to be a Queen? Either way, I do like the idea of her humbling herself later on in life.

And Peanut is too freakin adorable! Her colors are so fall-like, and I love her quills. She so tiny compared to her siblings; she's even shorter than her little brother. She better be thankful that sweet, shy Chux is her brother, because any other brother would give her hell for it. I like the relationship potential she has with her parents. I could see her and her father fighting a lot, like she does with her sister, but in the end, she's a total daddy's girl. And of course, she and her mom would love each other, but Sally would have to put on the "strict-mom" pants to control her wild child. Alas, poor Sally. You wanted a daughter to avoid having a mini-Sonic, but here, you have a daughter that's basically a mini-Sonic, but injected with steroids and given the temper of a volcano. Hope you got what you wished for.

Oh, ho, and poor Chux. He's so darn cute, and I take it he's a hybrid? He seems to have traits of both his parents' species. I like the idea of Sonic and Sally having a chubby kid, since you would never expect that from them! And I love his sweet, shy demeanor, and seeing a son of Sonic who ISN'T a carbon copy of his old man is surprising. (Yes, I, myself, am guilty of this, since my old version of my Sonamy Boom! child was basically that.) And I know that his parents are closer to the other two, but I dunno, I don't think that either one of them would be able to resist pinching' those chubby cheeks.  I do kind of hope that his sisters learn to respect him later on in life, perhaps after the "later on in life" incident you mentioned in his bio, but I suppose all close sibling relations gotta start from somewhere, right?

Bottom line, I love all of these kiddos! I do miss Selpie and Peanut in the reboot, but you can never have too much Chux, I suppose. Their designs are great, and they have such colorful personalities! Truly, this is the 25 Years Later we should have gotten.

My Sonsal characters do include Sonia and Manic but with different designs. Manic remains a hedgehog but inherits his mother's coloring while Sonia has a blend of her parents' appearances while remaining the canon species; Manic is a lot like his father in personality though with the quirk of being so afraid of water that he will bolt from a sound sleep if you threaten to throw water on him. Sonia is a total girly girl who turns out to prefer women (her future wife is undecided but we're leaning towards a Dalmatian unconnected to any canon characters). They have an older sister named Julayla who takes after her mother in species and her father in coloring. Julayla was a sickly child so she grew up in a sheltered environment and had her speed stunted (had she not been ill, she'd have inherited her father's speed in full; she's still faster than the average Mobian but nowhere near her dad so she somewhat resents her siblings who do have Dad's speed).
I have no problem with the comic offspring of the ships I use; I just feel they need some tweaking so they look like their own characters.

I definitely agree about the offspring looking like their own characters! I understand that in real life some people look just like their parents, but it seems silly that ALL the future kids would be copies of their parents. It especially bothered me with Jacques and Belle, looking just like their parents and having robotic limbs too for some reason. I like your explanation though, that they might have had birth defects.

I don't think there's any need to repeat the parent's gimmick, since most of the parents will still be around. The new characters should be able to offer up something new of their own to the story!

UniversesCollideInc In reply to SimonSoys [2015-06-20 15:13:16 +0000 UTC]

Glad you like our explanation for Jacques and Belle's limbs; I just felt that being a Robian who got cured would leave some mark that wasn't necessarily positive on Bunnie and altering her genes so that her children were more likely to have a birth defect that mirrored her Robian appearance seemed to fit the bill; she's devastated when her babies are born in that state (Jacques and Belle are twins in our verse) and needed prosthetics to learn to walk but neither they nor her husband blame her at all. Evangeline was a hybrid to make her stand out and also give her a reason to be buddy-buddy with Julayla, who spent her sickly childhood in relative isolation and has spent her whole life being told that she's not a proper princess (among other things, her favorite food is chili dogs, preferably with cheese, and her idea of a great date is hitting the mall with a stop at the food court) and needs to live up to her parents' legacy. Julayla mostly ignores them but it still hurts.
While we don't repeat gimmicks so to speak, certain characters do share interests with their parents and may fill similar positions. Like our Tails/Cosmo daughter Avis (how Cosmo came back is complicated and might change depending on the path of the AU set) who is obsessed with flying and shares her father's mutation but has rose red fur due to her Seedrian genes (I enjoyed Sonic X and wanted to adapt certain characters from it; I do believe we de-Scrappyed Chris) and Miles Jr./Twister who enjoys flying (and shares his father's mutation) but not inventing (he may or may not end up being a wizard with a fondness for wind spells). As to why they both share Tails' mutation, it just struck me as something that fit both of them. Their sister Rosemary the Seedrian is more yellow due to her fox genes despite them not displaying otherwise.

Silver/Amy. Okay, not too weird.

Bean/Nicole. ...I... wat.

And I'm married to Vector, actually. That happened. But I think we're planning a divorce right now. It's not working out. I guess our love was a shooting star that burned up too fast. :V

"Sonic, so tell me, how does it feel to spawn only disappointments?"

Cool ideas! I'm in the same boat as you when it comes to MXYL. Man, that was awful all around no matter who was writing it. And I do mean that (Sorry Flynn)."What-if?" scenarios are really fun to explore, but I don't like it when some stamps something as official when it comes to future things (or in this case, used to be comic canon).

I don't see Sonic getting married, becoming king, or having kids. I see the franchise having "Simpsons syndrome". They exist in this never aging (yet always changing) world.  In the earlier seasons, the Simpsons played around with "how will everyone be like older?" without out right saying "this is totally going to happen!" Which is why I love the episode where Lisa's future is told by a fortuneteller. It was just a really great "what-if" episode.

But I'm babbling here, I really like your concepts for Sonic and Sal's kids. As well as the little character back stories for all of them! It was a fun read!

Same, didn't enjoy Flynn's MXYL much more than the originals, but I did like King Shadow. Sally marrying Shadow to "tame" him and restore some peace was probably my favorite idea from those issues, but it never really went anywhere. Ah well.

But that's how I feel about stories like that too. I never want concrete answers. Maybes, maybe. But never SONIC WILL LIVE AND MARRY SALLY DEFINITELY AND HAVE THESE BABIES DEFINITELY FOR SURE.

I don't like the idea of Sonic actually choosing and settling down with any particular character. I like having him flirt with basically everyone, but never the idea of marriage and children. To me, he should be like Link from the Zelda games. I don't think we've ever seen him actually end up with any girl. There's tons that love him, and Zelda's clearly the OTP forever, but we never see them get married and smooch and have kids. Open ended is best. People can make up their own theories about the future and there'll be nothing that says it can't be so.

The only kind of future story I don't mind is one like Silver's. It's SO far removed that it doesn't really spoil anything about the characters' fates. And Silver's actively trying to CHANGE it, so even if something is set in stone, it's only set in stone temporarily.

I like What Ifs, but they don't belong in the official comic, or any official media. Leave that sort of thing to the fans, I say. XD
