Ossynia looked back as the kobolds swiftly put their village on silence, emptying the roads and covering the houses. She sighed and shifted her focus towards the mysterious creature flying in front of her, nearly vanishing into the dawn and early night sky, leaving behind only its creepy screeching amidst the trees.
‘This creature is after Maeralya… Why should I care… If it was me, she wouldn’t come… UGH, well, I guess there’s one thing we both should hate together, those shadows…’ Ossynia thought as she flew higher and higher in order to find Maeralya before the shadow did.
Fortunately, her speed was unmatched and she quickly head loud roars from amidst the trees at the base of a hill.
‘Oh well, here we go…’ Ossynia thought, as she begun her descent.
On the ground, Maeralya was being beaten and scratched by the shadow. Its amorphous shape allows it to create a variety of weapons, including extending its own claws and increased strength at night.
‘Don’t you hear ssshe…’ It murmured, as hit Maeralya hard enough to push her into the ground.
She struggled to get up, as already been defeated once, she was cornered at the entrance of her own lair, but she stomped the ground, determined to make a final stand.
‘Whoever “she” is, she has NOTHING I want to hear…’ She roared back at the shadow.
‘I can’t defeat it… I ran out of fire… It simply shrugs off my slashes… Its over…’ She thought to herself, however.
‘Talanassshta calls upon you… You WILL listen…’ the shadow exclaimed.
The shadow advanced against her, who marched forward too, to no avail. Her slashes passed through its smoking body, while its elongated claws scratched against her back, causing her to fall into the ground.
‘Now listen to her call…’ It said, as grabbed her neck and head, it charged what seemed to be a purple flame and opened her maw, firing upon it. She gurgled and coughed, as the veins through her head and neck begin to glow bright purple.
Suddenly a roar came from the sky and Ossynia descended upon the shadow, firing flames upon it, causing its smoking appearance to harden into a solid and vulnerable scales.
Ossynia landed into the ground, causing it to shake. The shadow, harmed retreated from Maeralya, who tried to get up once again, but fell into the ground once again.
‘Its over shadow… I won’t ran out of fire so quickly…’ Ossynia roared, as she charged and fired her fire once again at the shadow, causing it to harden even more.
However, her eyes grow widen open as the shadow morphed into a twolegged shape, causing its talons to be freed to shape into weapons. It advanced against her and slashed and scratched her scales, but she managed to strike it back and push around.
The two encircled each other, as the shadow’s talons morphed into hands, grabbing her neck and lifting her into the air as no drakkar would ever be able to and throwing her at the trees, bringing a large area down with her fall.
‘You ssshall hear her call too…’
‘I don’t think I am interested on this business…’ She bared her teeth.
Ossynia got up and charged her fire, surprising the shadow and stroke it right in its amorphous snout, causing it to harden. She then got up and grabbed its head, stabbing its eye sockets with her talons and pulling on opposite directions.
‘NOOoooo… You CAN’T resist he-‘
Ossynia then shattered its hardened skull into two, causing a burst of its purple flame and then to its whole body to vanish into a black smoke with the wind. She took deep breaths as she stomped into the ground and looked towards Maeralya, who immediately tried to get up again to stand against her.
‘You… You… WHY are you here? Come to finish the job? To kill me without any witnesses?? You have NO idea what you are on about-‘
‘You talk TOO much… If I wanted to kill you, I would have done already… And it didn’t seem you would put much of a fight…’
‘Saved by the yellow vermin once… Now saved by her babysitter… Will I ever regain any honor I had?’
‘A petty drakkar you are… Your honor holds more value for you than your life’
Maeralya’s nostrils bursted out smoke, as if she regained her fire once again out of pure anger.
‘WHICH SIDE YOU ARE? Ossynia, eh?’
‘Whatever side has its brain mass still intact, I suppose…’
‘Why do you defend them? WHY?! Those petty creatures… I would have killed them ALL if weren’t for you… You are not worthy of being a drakkar… You defend pests…!’
‘SPARE ME of your rambling. I saved your life, and I grow short in patience with you, a mere “thank you” will suffice, for I seek further contact with you…’
Maeralya took a heavy and deep breath.
‘I am… Grateful of your… Help.’
Ossynia nodded and then flapping her massive wings, turning back to the village, but Maeralya hold her tail for a second.
‘W-Wait!’
‘What do you want now?’
‘H-How is Lorsan?’
‘Lorsan? I admire you still care about him. He is recovering, kobold shamans don’t fail in service.’
‘I am glad.’
‘What is the matter? Afraid of admitting the “pests” you mention are saving your son? If only you opened your eyes wider, maybe you could learn some respect.’
She lifted from the ground as she returned to the village.
Maeralya stood there for a moment, maybe for the first time, in silence, she thought, she considered, but a burst of purple light spread through her eyes and veins, she bursted her lair in anger, slashing the ground and walls, saying all the possible profanities imaginable and unimaginable towards all those who cursed her life.
‘How DARE that miserable project of a drakkar direct to me like this?! Who she think she is?! AAAAAAAAAAAAARGGGH’
But then all the energy vanished and she fell into the ground, as a few tears rolled from her eyes.
‘I… I am… A disgrace…’
‘…Despair…’ She suddenly heard.
‘What? Who said that?!’ She looked around her destroyed items and lair.
‘Zalli?’
‘…No…’
‘Reveal yourself!’
Suddenly a large shadowy figure appeared in front of her, causing she to get up from the ground immediately on a defensive posture, roaring back at the creature.
‘Y-You didn’t died?!’
‘…Yes… But… Now I live in your mind…’
‘No… No! Leave me alone!’
‘...Don’t you see? Maeralya... You are in despair...’
‘…Despair?’
‘…A mother in despair, lost her son, her pride… Her husband… Now she ended the last thing she had, her home. Such a tragedy…’
‘No, no, I will make things right, I will…’
‘…You will NOT. You failed. Maybe in another world, you would make a good mother, but not this one, you see? Your emotions get the best out of you, unhinged, uncontrollable, how pathetic, no drakkars behave like this, did your parents never taught you any manners?’
‘I… I barely even knew them… I did… All of my life… I did everything alone…’
‘Aww. Such a tragedy, I see. But where is this greater warrior within you? Tskarina’s finest?’
‘A farse… A lie… Poorly trained…’
‘See? Even the mightiest of us have problems. Now let me propose some-‘
‘‘M-Mistress Maeralya…?’
Maeralya and the shadow looked down, as a small frail kobold approached the large drakkar, watching she talk to herself for the last few minutes.
‘See this kobold? You don’t need her anymore, you have no son to take care of. Smash her, exact the first of many, your revenge begins here.’
Maeralya got up with a grim, poisoned, staring at the kobold with a murderous intent.
‘M-Mistress?!’
Maeralya threw several pieces and potteries into the ground, breaking it, as well as taking the torches and candles and throwing it on paper, litting on fire.
‘I have no use for this lair anymore… I have NO USE for ANY of this… I have no use for YOU’
Maeralya turned to the kobold and stomped towards her, as the kobold fell into the ground.
‘My son is gone… Which means I have NO need of you…’
‘M-Mistress! What? What happened to him?!’
‘The yellow vermin took him! She and all her filthy beasts and maggots… But do you think I don’t know your little talons in all of this? Do you think I never realized YOU SAVED LORSAN??’
‘I…I… I just wanted the best for him! When you left him all alone in the forest! He wouldn’t survive!’
‘I KNOW WHAT IS BEST FOR MY SON.’
Amidst a scream, Maeralya lifted her arm and stomped Zalli, crushing her little body among her talons, and then she proceeded to brutally repeat the stomping until there was barely anything left. She sighed.
‘This… This is exactly what I will do to that freaking creature… I will SMASH HER UNTIL THERE IS NOTHING LEFT BUT A BLOODY PULP… I am coming for you, yellow vermin…’
She grimed to the outside, as her eyes shined a purple light.
The shadow approached her from behind.
‘How does it feel? To have the blood of a pest at your talons?’
Mearalya snarled, as she looked to her talons, she felt a sudden regret.
‘No… Zalli… She… She was a good servant… I… I shouldn’t…’
‘No, no! You did exactly what you had to do. Eliminate all guilt, vanish all mercy. I am here, for YOU, open your heart and mind for me, the comfortable embrace of darkness upon your soul. I will guide you towards your revenge…’
‘And… And my son?’
‘I will bring him back to you. I promise. Now, enough of talking, lets get moving, this fire will alert local drakkars.’
And so Maeralya left her cave, and all resemblance of reason and her past life.
Far away, in the kobold village…
Ossynia had arrived at the village, where a considerable crowd as expecting for her, and they all looked up her arrival and held tight as she landed causing a little quake.
‘I killed the shadow drakkar, kobolds, tonight, you have to worry about minus two threats! Ossynia announced to them, as they cheered up for a moment and then went home, as it was late in the night. Elya and speaker Torn stepped forward from the crowd to speak with her.
‘So… You really killed it?!’ Elya asked, as her eyes grew bright and wide open with the flames at the center of the village.
‘Yes… That thing put up some fight… But nothing I couldn’t handle, it is not my first fight, but those shadow drakkars… They are becoming more and more bold…’
‘What about Maeralya?’
‘Eh… I guess between a real threat and her, I would choose she. She just rambled and rambled in the aftermath and I just wanted a slightly recognition that I saved her…’
‘Oh… Did you get it?’
‘I guess… She is all talk and threats, it may works with smaller races like the kobolds, and younglings as you and Lorsan, but once she has to face a threat of her size… And even better and BIGGER, she cowers in silence like hatchling…’
‘The red monster likes to play with her victims. But she is devoided of soul and character, nothing but emptiness and desire to feel superior to compensate her lack of ability and empathy.’ Speaker Torn intervened in their conversation.
‘I… I am sorry Torn… I wished my talons could grab her neck and twist it in brutal ways to atoll for all the death and suffering she caused your people. I didn’t want to be seem like her life mattered more than yours, its unfortunately, a rule of the honor challenges, no death…’
‘Don’t be sorry. You are honorable, Ossynia. Your stance with the law and honor demonstrate how your character is above hers, for she would not have showed the same, in her victory, which fortunately had no chance of happening. We appreciate your support.’
‘Aww… Torn, you are so young, you know, but still, you speak with the patience and wisdom of a hundred years. Never change’
‘You embarrass me, mistress Ossynia, for I have not such wisdom. I just lead my people the most peaceful route, for anything else, our community goes extinct. Which by the way, mistress Ossynia, the council and many commoners asked if you could spend your time in the village, in order to protect and prevent any bold predators and… Drakkars… from attacking.’
‘I shall remain here, speaker Torn. Nothing warmers my heart more than watch at the younglings sleep peacefully this night and so their parents.’
‘I agree, mistress, I agree.’
‘Alright, Ossynia, I will be going to the healers’ pavilion, as Torn allowed me to stay with Lorsan.’ Elya said, after a brief moment listening to their conversation.
‘Good. I will be at the clearing there, don’t want to bump or crush anyone or house nearby me…’
‘Maybe some good exercises would make you loss some weight, huh?’ Torn teased.
Ossynia stared at him with flames of her eyes, but then burst out laughing.
‘How DARE you little kobold… Maybe I should teach you a lesson of how many tons there are in here…’
‘H-Hey? Guys… N-not now…’ Elya said, from a corner.
‘Haha Don’t worry Elya. Its all fine. Just some fun with a friend.’ Ossynia said.
‘Some humor definitely lighten up our mood in those hard times’ Torn completed.
‘Alright…’ Elya said, as she disappeared in the corner.
After some moment resting, Torn started speaking.
‘Ossynia, I would like to talk something with you.’
‘I am listening…’
‘Our kobolds have been huh… Excited with your presence on our village. They sing and praise once you defended them against the evil drakkar, and now defeated the shadow. We really appreciate your selfless efforts, but… Some kobolds, they are… Dumber than others.’
‘Your point?’
‘Please… Some hatchlings were interested in meeting you, you know, they still wide awaken until now. I told them you weren’t receiving visitors, but they didn’t stop talking about you since you departed after the shadow.’
‘Awww… As a broodmother, I would love to meet, talk and share my stories with them. But, now I am really tired, maybe we could try tomorrow, yeah?’ She said as she let out a loud yawn.
‘Yes, thank you, I knew you would be kind with them!’
‘Nah… That’s nothing Torn, those younglings deserve the attention they seek from a true ancient drakkar.’
‘Yes, I agree. But huh, there is when the problem comes…’
‘What?’
‘They really, really, really, really want to meet with you. And I am afraid they will escape the brood in the night and try to approach you sleeping, my wife Rirta should have put them to sleep by now. I know both of us don’t want you to accidentally crush those poor little fools, so yeah huh, could you keep some extra attention?’
Ossynia’s soft smile turned into the grumpiest face ever.
‘Good. This is going to be a nice night, very nice… Good Tsshar, is this going to be the same for every night?
‘I-I promise they won’t cause any trouble to you, mistress.’
‘This is going to be a Loooooong night.’
Torn stood still for a moment, and for once, broke his own rule to not be sorry.
‘I am sorry, Ossynia.’
‘Don’t be, little kobold. I am fine with them.’
Ossynia smiled, as Torn nodded and moved to his place, and she walked away from the village and settled in the enlarged clearing, knowing this wouldn’t be a conventional night…
