Description TOOT! My first tutorial. Please tolerate the crappy resolution on the example pics. You deserve better, I know. I suck all kinds of ass today.

I'll probably be making another GIMP tutorial for non-reference paintings, using the burn tool. Note, people: don't be stupid. You can use this tutorial even if you don't have GIMP; it's basically just showing how to work with my painting style and the best ways to utilize certain tools. *smacks you over the head with a trendy purse*

So there you go. Tutorial. See it. Use it. Hope to God it doesn't suck. If you have any other questions or you think something more could be added, please tell me.

What is the hardness of the brushes you are using? I think i keep making mine too soft

SimplyZippy In reply to LaraMuk [2011-01-08 08:09:34 +0000 UTC]

in this style, I typically used very hard brushes (try within the top 75-80%, maybe) on the airbrush tool. let the airbrush effect create the soft shading, rather than a solid, soft-edged sphere.

This is awesome! I use gimp all the time. I'm so glad you made this tutorial GIMP has a lot of potential. More so than photoshop. Simply because its open source and the world has a say in it's future, VS photoshop where we can only voice what we want from Adobe. Glad to see you supporting GIMP. hopefully it takes over!

I can't get enough of tutorials like these.
Even though this is for GIMP, the techniques are applicable to other progams.
Thanks for this!!

SimplyZippy In reply to MakeupLover [2008-02-02 16:56:22 +0000 UTC]

yeah, I might have made the tutorial a little to brief on the layer subject it's probably a little hard to follow.

Its great to see what can be done with a 'free' program with the same quality as the $300.00 programs....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SimplyZippy In reply to SimonMJester [2007-11-29 21:21:22 +0000 UTC]

oh, I know it some graphics programs are ridiculously-priced! some are even up to a thousand dollars, actually.

the only problem with this free problem is that it does have some bugs in it.. there aren't as many available brushes and filter options, and the program itself tends to make the entire system lag.

thank you for the fav and the lovely comment

SimonMJester In reply to SimplyZippy [2007-11-29 21:45:17 +0000 UTC]

Do you have Gimp 2.4? Latest release is now available for Windows. So far in my limited use it has worked great. I understand why there aren't so many brushes and other great gizmos. Its after all, Open Source and free. Just put in a request with a programmer and see if they can contribute to the project with the idea! Thats the flexibility of these Open Source projects...

...trick is finding that computer geek who understands artisteese...

SimplyZippy In reply to SimonMJester [2007-11-29 23:23:08 +0000 UTC]

for me, the limited brushes aren't really a big deal, since I only use a range of ten different sizes of the same shape for each of my pieces in fact, there are things that I like about GIMP that other programs don't have.. for instance, the opacity on the airbrush tool can be used for really subtle hues, whereas Photoshop, for instance, doesn't have that capability as far as their settings go.
