Description
Just great...
Jeremy White trudged down the middle of the rain soaked street, unwary and uncaring of any cars that might not swerve out of the way fast enough to avoid him.
He was once again dwelling on his glory days, back when he was known as Jukebox Jeremy and the only thing played more often than his songs was the newest Pepsi commercial. Or at least that was how it had seemed at the time.
Now he was a nobody, lucky to get an audience enough to earn the spare change to buy a brew. To make things worse, his favorite dive had just come under new management, and he was no longer welcome there.
Once again he was alone, with nothing to love but the guitar strapped to his back.
As he passed some nondescript tavern he remembered the couple of bucks in his pocket from the night before. A friendly gentleman on his way out of the bar had tossed it his way, just before the old barkeep told him that his money wasn't good there anymore.
It's enough to end tonight... he thought. The optimism that had been keeping him alive for so long seemed to slip for a moment, for his next thought was. It's enough to end it all...
As he debated whether he wanted a beer in his belly or a bullet in his head, he gazed absentmindedly through the tavern window at the assortment of patrons inside. People talking, laughing, drinking. A man slipping a note to a sleeping woman. Probably a lover.
A second later he realized he had seen the man before. In fact, it was the same man that had slipped him the money on the previous evening. With this physical reminder that he still had some place in the world, his optimism was temporarily restored. He strolled into the bar and ordered a drink.
