It's been WAY too long, since I've seen this movie. I seriously need to rewatch it at some point.

Someone on Tumblr claimed that Lilo is too much of a brat, and acts abusive towards Nani. Because why wouldn't a young girl recently traumatized by her parents dying in a car crash be anything but a lovely, compliant angel?

I can't see how a character like Lilo would act like Pink Diamond ( first appearance in SU ) if she experienced her parents' deaths.

A person on Tumblr got it in their head that Lilo and Nani are in an "abusive" relationship, where Lilo abuses Nani, and uses "Ohana means family!" to coerce her against leaving, like Lilo is Nani's drunken husband or something. She doesn't seem to believe this is a film about traumatized siblings trying to rebuild their broken family; it's about two people not being perfect enough for her, and spreading a "bad message."

I remember when the movie first came out, and I didn't see or notice anything "abusive" about the girls. Yes, Nani has a whole responsibility thrust on her because of her parents' death, but she's doing her best, even at her age. And believe me, I've learned a very long time ago that no one is perfect. Children deal with trauma in different ways, and they often don't have the ability to understand how their actions affect others, or to think too far ahead in the future. I commend that movie for showing how hard both girls were working to keep their family together.

"Lilo should respond to trauma the way a six-year-old girl would not, Nani should be unrealistically perfect and constantly tormented by Lilo, and I think their family dynamic is similar to another film, The Godfather, which is insane, but I also think none of you have seen it. I also equate family unity with an invitation to abuse; I don't believe it's set in 'the present' because Lilo likes listening to Elvis Presley records; I didn't even bring up the systemic marginalization of Lilo and Nani as native Hawaiians because I'm too much of a Karen to care about that; and I accidentally described the second half of the film to 'improve the ending', despite clearly having never watched it."
This reinforces to me why it's a great film: it encourages morons to grief on it for not being trite, guileless entertainment. If a film makes you willfully expose yourself as a bitter moral absolutist, that tells me it accomplished something, like any great work should. It's gratifying to see that the response to it has been a renewed interest in it, and wonderful artwork and support like this.
