We don't need to have another Lynx, what Pokemon needs is the Mother Fucking Eye of The Tiger Pokemon!
1. Zodiac theory. (The Fire Starters are INSPIRED off of the Chinese Zodiacs)
2. I've seen another convincing theory of a trend that Pokemon is starting. Last generation Chestnaught, Delphox, and Greninja represented the Paladin, Mage, and Rogue classes in classic RPG's. This time we think there is a circus theme with the starters: Rowlet will be the Magician or Ring leader, Litten will be the Tiger that jumps through rings of fire, and Popplio is an acrobatic Sea lion.

Consider the Zodiac Theory, that all of the Fire Starters are inspired off of the Chinese Zodiacs, eventually we'll probably get a Fire Snake which would make for a much better fitting Fire/Poison type pokemom, but Serperior was still pretty resent so they would likely want to hold the snake off for now. Imagine a new possible Cobra pokemon, since there is more than one species of cobra...maybe Arbok could be a spitting Cobra and the other one could be a King Cobra, or vise versa. Or image a Black Mamba Pokemon, the most toxic snake.

I've heard people say they can't make a Fire Horse Starter because there is already Ponyta and Rapidash, but we got a new Fire Fox in Gen 6 even though we already had Vulpix and Ninetails, and imagine if the Fire Horse became a fiery Pegasus!

This is Pokemon, they are fake creatures BASED off of things in real life, so the artists are free to take liberties in designing a species in their world. The Word origins of Shinx are Shiny and Lynx, while Jynx is a play on the word Jinx, which is a curse of bad luck. Every single Pokemon name is some form of play on words.

Mightyena is a wolf, not a hyena. Charizard is a dragon, not a lizard. And so on. The designer of each Pokémon did not pick their English names.
Shinx in Japanese is Korinku コリンク
Luxio in Japanese is Rukushio ルクシオ
Luxray in Japanese is Rentoraa レントラー
Lynx in Japanese is Ooyamaneko オオヤマネコ and matches nothing
Lion in Japanese is Raion ライオン and matches R-starting names
Tiger in Japanese is Tora トラ and matches Ren-TORA
Shinx is a lion cub, Luxio is a young lion, Luxray is an adult lion (you could even argue that it's a tiger because of its name, if you'd like to go that way). The body type matches, the mane matches, the tail matches. Lynxes have triangular, tufted ears, and a very small and round tail. Lions have big, round ears, a mane, and a long, tufted tail.

I kinda have to disagree about your Mightyena argument
Charizard is a little more difficult because they probably originally wanted him to be Dragon type, same with Gyarados, but if Charizard was a Dragon Type in gen 1 then he would be resistant to water and over shadow grass by a long shot making it far more powerful than the other two starters and it's already one of the most popular pokemon in general, so they just stuck the Flying type on Charizard and Gyarados to try to balance the game, and in gen 2 when they introduced Breeding they put Charizard and Gyarados in the Dragon Egg group, and then in Gen 6 my boy got the X mega evolution. It's quite obvious that Charizard is supposed to be a Dragon, but in real life there are flying lizards in Indonesia...I'm going off topic now...You brought up Charizard, it's my favorite Pokemon, and I love Dragons...story over...
Anyway using the Japanese names doesn't help your argument too much...because I don't speak Japanese...but I see your point, I have actually always seen Luxray as a Lion, it's quite obviously a Lion, and I've never thought of Luxray as a Lynx.
Back to the main point at hand, Litten probably won't be a Lynx.

Well, I went with the Japanese names because even if names have nothing to do with designs most of the time, it's Japanese names that are "canon".
As for the balance issue, there was absolutely zero balance in Gen I. Psychic was overpowered, Bug was a awful because bugs were weak and had weak attacks, Dragon didn't have any move outside a fixed damage-dealing move, the only Ghost-type line in the whole game was not only weak to Psychic but coded incorrectly so that Ghost-type moves couldn't hurt Psychics (AND Gengar was Special-oriented when Ghost was a physical type, so it was a bad Pokémon all around).
My point is that there are no lynx Pokémon yet, even if they were we already have over 10 monkey and 10 toad/frog Pokémon so it wouldn't hurt if we got another one. I want a lynx Pokémon and I see the potential in Litten, which I hope will not disapoint. We'll see what happens

The zodiac thing is just a theory, you need to force species a LOT for them to fit the designed animals (Typhlosion is a honey badger, not a rat - Delphox is a fennec, not a dog) so I wouldn't be worried about that. I really want a lynx Pokémon for once :T
