Sir-Douglas-of-Fir — Quests Gone Awry

Description I really didn't want to do the College of Winterhold faction quests, but it was the only way to get some really nice things (like a couple of Word Walls, a Dragon Priest mask, and, as mentioned above, the amulet fragment of Jyrik Gaulderson). So we get instances like this one.

In my own little world, I like to think Shelob went back and instituted Tolfdir as the true Arch-Mage. The guy really deserves it.

Taken in Skyrim, edited in GIMP.

Yeah, this was kind of my reaction the first time I played through the College of Winterhold, as a Nord warrior who just knew a few novice and apprentice level spells.

"You have our gratitude, Arch-Mage."
'Ah, good, fight's over, I'm about to get a nice reward- wait, what did he say?'

The explanation I heard for this promotion is because you're Dragonborn and have the Voice, that makes you a master of a school of magic that no one else at the College can do.  I do agree that Tolfdir would be the most logical choice as Aren's successor.

Questionable selection of Arch-Mages aside, the College is my favorite faction to join in Skyrim.

They're a lot of fun, to be sure.

That damned college always sits in the way of my other Gaulder fragment or priest mask! I don't wanna be Arch-Mage, I'm just here for my little fragment

For my character it's not that big a deal since he's a study-holic prodigy who throws himself into everything he gets involved in. But it does seem a bit absurd at times when they let warriors be the guy in charge of a group of mages.

I have developed my own theories about this. One is that everyone believes there is a curse on the position of Arch-Mage which is why they stick the new guy/gal who hasn't heard the rumours with the job. Another theory states they all thought having an Arch-Mage who wouldn't ever be there and leave them in peace was a good idea. I get the impression a lot of Winterhold people are studying things they don't want enquired about or examined closely. Or perhaps everyone just wanted an Arch-Mage who was willing to do their fetch quests for them.

That or they found a willing and very eager customer and made him stay in the College by making him Archmage. I swear, that's the reason they made my Breton Archmage. Seriously, I went on a spell tome buying binge (ten spell tomes total) and my gold was brought down by half the original amount. Scary. Wizards are now swindling you.

All valid theories. In the case of many guilds (especially in Oblivion, but Skyrim is guilty of it too), it seems like they make you leader by virtue of being the only one willing to get off his/her lazy keister and do something about whatever crisis is going on.

"Dragonborn, go get the Staff of Magnus and save the College!"
"But... you're a master-level mage. Shouldn't you go?"
"No no, I'm much to busy. I, er... have to wash my hair."

This happen on my first game-play, as a redguard, 2 handed weapon specialist, very awkward.

I love how they let gigantic, heavily armored men join the Thieves Guild as well.

"I stole that vase you wanted."

"Yes, I could hear the guards from 3 miles away, along with your footsteps."

"I'm sorry if I can't sneak well while wearing 70 pounds of ebony armor."

Never let it be said that the factions of Tamriel are not equal-opportunity employers.

"Can you sing?"
"No."
"Can you play an instrument?"
"No."
"Can you delve into caves and dungeons and kill everything."
"Yep."
"Welcome to the Bards College!"

Heh heh. At least they don't hail you as their glorious leader after you do nothing but find a book in a cave and make up the missing bits.

Well, the Champion of Cyrodill was Arch-Mage, and there are those who say he was a career warrior.

This is true. 'Course, I think Oblivion at least tried a *little* bit to make you learn magic before completing the Mages' Guild.
